Dayton Bombers News Release

KEEPING UP WITH THE CYCLONES: The Bombers faced the Cincinnati Cyclones at US Bank Arena on Wednesday and fell 3-2 to the in-state rival. Dayton opened up scoring with a slap shot from Masahito Nishiwaki past Cyclones goalie Dov Grumet-Morris just 4 minutes into the game. Helpers came from Ryan Reid and Corey LeClair. The Cyclones would tie it at one as the teams headed to the locker room. It was the Cyclones turn to score in the opening minutes of the second period as Cory Urquhart netted his first of two goals on the night past Rejean Beauchemin. All-Star Matt Beaudoin knotted the game at 2 when he scored his 30th goal of the season from Scott Kelman and Mike Walsh. It was the Cyclones, however, that came out on top when Urquhart scored a third period power play goal to give the Cyclones the win. Beauchemin made 34 of 37 saves on the night. The Bombers were 7/8 on the penalty kill, holding down a Cincinnati team that is 20.9% on the man advantage at home.

REPEAT AT READING: The Bombers fought their way back from a two-goal deficit to take the third place Reading Royals to a shootout on Saturday night in Reading. Rookie forward Ryan Smyth tied the game at a goal a piece in the first period with assists from Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and Britt Dougherty, but the Royals owned the second frame, outshooting the Bombers 17-5. Dayton would turn the tables in the third, however, as Masahito Nishiwaki and Matt Beaudoin each netted goals from Mike Campaner and Scott Kelman, respectively. Deadlocked through overtime, it was Reading's Kevin Saurette who was the game's hero as he scored the only goal of the shootout to capture a victory for the Royals. Bombers goalie Jeremy Duchesne made 39 of 42 stops in the contest and was 4 of 5 in the shootout. The Bombers also held Reading scoreless on the power play, killing both Royals chances. Dayton is now 3-1-1-3 against Reading this season.

#600 COMES IN DRAMATIC FASHION: Bombers head coach Bill McDonald won his 600th career game as the Bombers defeated the Johnstown Chiefs 3-2 in a shootout on the road. Matt Beaudoin tallied his league-leading 32nd and 33rd goals of the season with assists from Scott Kelman and Mike Berry in the third period of the game to take a brief lead over the Chiefs. Johnstown would come back just minutes later to tie the game at 2 and force overtime. Bombers netminder Rejean Beauchemin kept his composure as the Chiefs fired 8 shots at him in overtime, but he did not allow a goal. In the shootout, the Bombers second in as many nights, Masahito Nishiwaki and Brad Bonello each managed a goal past Ryan Nie to earn the victory. Beauchemin did not allow any Johnstown goals in the shootout. The goalie finished with 45 saves on 47 shots and earned his 12th win of the season.

MORE ON MCDONALD: With the shootout win on Saturday Bill McDonald picked up his 600th career win, his 541st of the regular season. McDonald has coached a combined 1,151 games including post-season in the CoHL, CHL, WPHL, IHL and ECHL. The Thunder Bay, Ontario, native's regular season record is 541-398-116 (.513) while his post-season record, which includes 4 league championships, is 59-37 (.615). McDonald is 21-18-9 this season with the Bombers (he missed two games in January).

IT'S AS EASY AS 1, 2, 30: American Conference All-Star Matt Beaudoin scored his league-leading 33rd goal of the season against Johnstown on Saturday night. Beaudoin now ranks 4th in the league in overall scoring (58 pts.), second amongst rookies. His two-goal game on Saturday was his 16th multi-point game of the season. His second goal of the night was a short-handed goal, his second of the season.

WHO WANTS TO GO STREAKING: Two Bombers players are on active points streaks following last week's action. Matt Beaudoin has a four game goal and point streak in the works. Beaudoin has amassed 6 goals and 7 points in that time frame. Newcomer Scott Kelman is on a three game assist streak dating back to Wednesday's game in Cincinnati.

LET'S DO SHOTS: The Reading Royals were at it again, firing shot after shot at Bombers goaltender Jeremy Duchesne on Friday night. In the end, the Royals pelted Duchesne with 42 shots in the contest and another 5 in the shootout. Thus far, the Bombers have been outshot by the Royals 227-297. The Bombers improved to 14-10-3-4 when being outshot by opponents with the win on Saturday.

WHAT A BUZZ KILL: Dayton's penalty killing units were in full effect last week as they went 14/16 (87.5%) to shut down any scoring opportunities for Cincinnati, Reading and Johnstown. Last week the Bombers were 10/11 in penalty killing situations as well. Overall, the Bombers are 81.0% with a man in the box.

TOTAL RECALL: All-Star center Yannick Tifu has been loaned to the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans. Thus far Tifu has seen action in seven games, and has tallied one goal and one assist. This is the second call-up for the Brossard, Quebec native this season. Tifu previously spent nine games with the Albany River Rats where he picked up two goals and three assists. The Americans are the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers.
