Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (20-36) scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs (20-35), 6-0, Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. The series now features a rubber game on Thursday morning.
RHP Alfred Gutierrez (3-2) worked around five walks and three hits to earn the win for Richmond. Gutierrez worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and fifth innings.
Despite the loss, RHP Denyi Reyes (1-7), yielded just two hits after the first inning and worked six frames on six hits, four runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.
The Flying Squirrels went to work right away against Reyes. C.J. McElroy (2-for-4) led off the game with a double and scored on a two-base hit by Jalen Miller (2-for-5). Reyes retired the next two batters, but Zach Houchins (4 RBI) smacked a three-run homer (#3) over the Maine Monster.
Richmond added two runs in the eighth inning against Jordan Weems. Jacob Heyward (2-for-4) delivered a run-scoring double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Houchins. Weems did record four strikeouts over two innings pitched.
Newly promoted CF Jarren Duran finished 2-for-5 with his first Double-A extra-base hit, a double in the first. Duran is leading all of the minors with a .387 average. Bobby Dalbec reached base three times with a single and two walks. Joey Curletta walked twice, and Jhon Nunez went 1-for-4.
Richmond's bullpen fired four innings on just two hits. Chase Johnson worked three innings on two hits and four strikeouts. Tyler Cyr pitched a perfect ninth.
Portland's four-game winning streak (season-high) was snapped at four games, but they can take the series with a win on Thursday.
Portland and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants) wrap up their three-game set on Thursday morning with an 11:00 AM start. RHP Tanner Houck (5-4, 4.47) makes his 11th start of the year. Richmond counters with LHP Garrett Williams (1-6, 5.18).
Radio coverage on the WPEI U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network begins at 10:45 AM. The game is available on the tune-in app and MiLB.TV.
Thursday morning is Education Day. Tickets are available at 207-879-9500 or seadogs.com. Book your nine inning vacation today!
