Sea Dogs Suffer First Loss

(Norwich, CT) - Travis Ishikawa smacked a one-out, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting the Connecticut Defenders to a 2-1 win over Portland on Tuesday night. Mike James (0-1) suffered the loss for the Sea Dogs, allowing his first base runner in three appearances.

Sergio Romo (1-0) pitched a perfect 11th to pick up the win for Connecticut.

The series is now tied at one game apiece with the two teams closing out the series on Wednesday night.

Justin Masterson improved his scoreless streak seven strikeouts. Connecticut starter Brooks McNiven was nearly flawless, scattering four baserunners (single & 3 walks) over six frames.

Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on a run-scoring ground out by Carlos Sosa with the bases loaded. On the previous play, Ishikawa reached on an error by centerfielder Bubba Bell.

Portland came right back to tie the game in the seventh inning on Jay Johnson's sacrifice fly down the right field line in foul territory.

The pitching staff dominated once again for the Sea Dogs, picking up 15 strikeouts over 11 innings. The pitchers have combined for 31 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched during the two games.

Chad Rhoades, Jose Vaquedano and Hunter Jones accounted for eight strikeouts.

Notes...Both teams were hitless with runners-in-scoring position (Portland 0-for-6/Connecticut 0-for-9)...Jeff Natale reached base all four times (single, 2 BB, HBP).
