
Mathews hits two-run double in dramatic 3-2 loss to Rock Cats

New Britain, CT- Aaron Mathews stroked a two-run double in top of the eighth inning to tie the game, 2-2, but David Winfree's walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the New Britain Rock Cats a 3-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium.
Winfree (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) lined Mike MacDonald's 1-1 pitch into the leftfield corner, scoring Matt Moses (2-for-4, 2 R) all the way from first base to give New Britain (1-3) its first win of the season. MacDonald (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run on three hits in one-plus inning of relief.
Right-hander Zach Ward (1-0) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to record the win for the Rock Cats.
New Britain jumped ahead, 2-0, in the bottom of the second inning with four hits off Fisher Cats' right-hander Jean Machi. Brock Peterson (1-for-4, R) and Moses led off with a pair of singles. One out later, Dustin Martin (1-for-3, RBI) singled home Peterson. Drew Butera (0-for-3, RBI) added a fielder's choice RBI to plate Moses.
Machi settled down from there, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings in his first professional start since July 3, 2005.
New Hampshire (0-4) tied it in the eighth inning against Rock Cats' left-hander Jay Sawatski. Brian Jeroloman (1-for-2, 2 BB, R) and Ryan Klosterman (0-for-2, BB, R) drew walks, and Mathews (1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) lifted an opposite field double into the right field corner to knock in both runners.
The Fisher Cats and Rock Cats wrap up their brief two-game series Wednesday morning at 10:35am when New Hampshire left-hander A.J. Wideman (0-0, 0.00 pitches against New Britain lefty Ryan Mullins (0-0, 0.00). Coverage begins at 10:15am on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
