Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
A pair of homers in the seventh proved to be the difference for the Akron Aeros, who beat the Binghamton Mets 3-2 at NYSEG Stadium Tuesday. Binghamton's loss evens the series at a game apiece.
The B-Mets (3-3) went ahead in the second. Salomon Manriquez led off by hitting a fly ball that was dropped by Akron centerfielder Jose Constanza for a two-base error. After moving to third on a groundout, Manriquez scored on Ambiorix Concepcion's double to left-center for a 1-0 Binghamton lead.
Akron (2-3) didn't solve B-Mets starter Jonathon Niese until the fourth. After the lefty retired the first 11 in a row, Matt Whitney reached him for a two-out solo homer to tie the score. However, Mike Carp responded in the bottom of the frame, leading off with a longball of his own to put Binghamton back on top 2-1.
Edgar Alfonzo relieved Niese in the seventh and, after getting an out, gave up a game-tying homer to Wes Hodges. Two batters later, Chris Gimenez went deep off Alfonzo (0-1) as well to put Akron ahead for good.
Akron reliever J.D. Martin (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win and Randy Newsom pitched the ninth for his first save.
Wednesday, the B-Mets play the rubber game of their three-game series with the Akron Aeros. Jose Sanchez (1-0, 0.00) will start for Binghamton against Akron lefty Chuck Lofgren (0-0, 5.40). Game time is 6:35 with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:20 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
Notes: the B-Mets have scored four runs or less in five of their six games...Akron has hit 10 homers in five games...seven of Binghamton's 10 hits were for extra bases, including six doubles...Carp has hit both of Binghamton's homers this season...the B-Mets hit into three double plays.
