New Britain Rock Cats News Release
April 8, 2008, New Britain, CT - Matt Moses singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and David Winfree's double to left field knocked him in to give the Rock Cats a 3-2 win over visiting New Hampshire.
New Britain entered the game with the lowest team batting average in the league. The Rock Cats broke out their bats in the second inning, though, with four hits. Brock Peterson and Moses reached base on back-to-back singles to start the inning. Dustin Martin then delivered a single to left field that scored Peterson for a 1-0 lead. Moses advanced to third on a throwing error by the left fielder before coming around to score on a fielder's choice by Drew Butera.
Oswaldo Sosa dazzled in his first start of the season, tossing five shutout innings. He limited the Fisher Cats just two hits and struck out five. At one point, Sosa retired eight straight batters. David Shinskie followed with two perfect innings in relief with three strikeouts.
The Fisher Cats were kept at bay until the top of the eighth. Jay Sawatski issued two one-out walks. Aaron Matthews then delivered a two-run double to right field that tied the game.
Zach Ward (1-0) picked up the win for the Rock Cats. New Hampshire starter Jean Machi tossed six solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked none. Mikel MacDonald (0-1) suffered the loss.
