Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Bowie, Maryland- One night after watching the Bowie Baysox pick up two comeback wins, the Portland Sea Dogs worked some comeback magic of their own. Trailing 6-5 as they entered the ninth inning, Portland scored three runs, erasing the deficit, and picking up an 8-6 victory at Prince George's Stadium.
With two outs in the top of the first inning, the Sea Dogs began their offensive attack with four consecutive hits. Mark Wagner and Will Middlebrooks started the rally with back-to-back singles, before Matt Spring's double off the bottom of the right field wall plated both of his teammates. Jon Hee also picked up a single in the frame, as the visitors quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Portland tacked on another run in the third, as Will Middlebrooks smacked his 15th home run of the season to right-center field.
Bowie answered with two runs in their half of the third. Greg Miclat led off the frame with a single, then quickly stole second base. After a pair of outs and a walk, Joe Mahoney singled to right, plating Miclat. Caleb Joseph followed with a single, driving in LJ Hoes.
The Baysox tied the score one inning later. With one out, Greg Miclat singled and Xavier Avery walked. Both players proceeded to steal their next base (Miclat to third, Avery to second), setting up Cesar Izturis, who flew out to center field, scoring Miclat.
In the sixth inning, the Sea Dogs regained the lead. With two outs, Matt Spring walked and Jon Hee doubled, putting two runners in scoring position. Mitch Dening capitalized on the opportunity, dropping in a bloop single, as both runners came around to score.
Rain began to fall in the last half of the sixth, and so did the Portland lead. Bowie scored three runs in that half of the frame on one hit and five walks. The hit came off of LJ Hoes' bat, as he ripped a two-run double down the left field line, erasing a 5-4 deficit for a 6-5 lead.
The Baysox maintained their lead until the ninth, when the Sea Dogs turned things around with three runs. With one out, Ryan Dent walked and Jeremy Hazelbaker singled. Alex Hassan followed with a ground ball to third that was bobbled by Joe Mahoney, allowing Dent to go all the way around with the tying run. After Mark Wagner grounded into a fielder's choice, Will Middlebrooks and Matt Spring picked up run scoring singles, giving Portland an 8-6 lead.
Cesar Cabral pitched a scoreless ninth for his first Double-A save, as the Sea Dogs held on for the victory. Josh Fields (1-0) earned the win in his first appearance in the Red Sox organization, tossing two and one-third scoreless innings for Portland. Brandon Cooney (1-2) took the loss for Bowie, allowing three unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning.
The Sea Dogs and Baysox will conclude their four-game series on Thursday morning at 11:05. Brock Huntzinger (5-9, 6.88) will make the start for Portland, while Oliver Drake (1-3, 8.26) will take the hill for Bowie.
