Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Trailing 2-1 in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and two down, Quincy Latimore doubled to the wall in center, clearing the bases, and paving the way for a 4-3 victory for the Altoona Curve on Wednesday night against the Binghamton Mets at Blair County Ballpark.
In what was a pitchers' duel through the first seven innings between Curve starter Jeff Locke and Mets starter Tobi Stoner, the Mets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth before Latimore provided the game winning hit in the bottom half of the inning.
In his first inning of work, relief pitcher Josh Stinson (2-2) got the first two batters out easily in the eighth inning before back-to-back singles from Andrew Lambo and Tony Sanchez put runners at the corners. The next batter, Matt Curry, walked to load the bases before Latimore cleared them with a double.
Leading, 4-2, in the ninth, Noah Krol came on and allowed one run after a strikeout wild pitch extended the game, but with runners at first and third and two down, he got the Mets leading hitter, Jordany Valdespin, to ground out to short to end the ballgame, earning his 17th save of the season.
Locke went the first six innings of the game without allowing a run and he allowed only one through seven innings of work as he allowed a game-tying solo home run in his final frame. All told, Locke went seven and allowed one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Locke went a career-high eight innings in his last home start on July 23rd.
The Curve took an early lead in the third inning as Starling Marte, who singled to start the inning to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, scored on a wild pitch from Stoner. Stoner did not allow another run for the rest of his outing which lasted seven innings, as he allowed only two hits. The run was unearned.
In a tie, 1-1, game in the eighth, the Mets worked a run off reliever Aaron Thompson to take a 2-1 lead before Anthony Claggett (4-2) was called upon to find the final two outs of the inning despite a steady rain.
The win for the Curve is their second straight against the Mets in a three-game series, earning them their first home series victory since they won two-of-three against New Britain on June 16th. The Curve have also won five-of-six this season against Binghamton.
The series with Binghamton concludes on Thursday at 7 p.m., and it will be the last of four Summer Cruise Series dates that features a giveaway to the first 500 fans 21 and older. All fans that have collected all four items in the series, and bring them to the game on September 4th vs. Richmond, will be entered to win a drawing for a cruise for four thanks to Nittany Travel.
"All the Right Moves" will be Tom Cruise film of choice this time and the first 500 fans 21 & up will receive a foam football, honoring Cruise's role in the film as football player, Stefen Djordjevic. Not coincidentally, the 1983 film was shot almost entirely in nearby Johnstown, PA. It will also be a Thirsty Thursday at BCB thanks to Rocky 104.9 with $2 draft specials on 16oz. Miller Lite and $1.50 specials on small 22oz. sodas.
RHP Mike Colla (4-8, 4.00) will start for Altoona (48-61) on Thursday in the final game of the three-game series and he'll be opposed by RHP Matt Harvey (0-3, 5.76) for Binghamton. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and great seats for the game are still available by calling the Curve at 877.99.CURVE or by visiting www.AltoonaCurve.com. Pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 6:30 p.m.
