August 3, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Bowie, Maryland- The Bowie Baysox rallied for one win and held on for another in a doubleheader sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday night. The Baysox came back from a six-run deficit to take the first game 7-6 in eight innings. Bowie then beat Portland 5-4 in the second game of the twin bill. L.J. Hoes led the way for the Baysox with a three-run homer in both games.
The Sea Dogs appeared to be well on their way to a win in the first game. Mark Wagner homered in both the first and third innings as Portland led 6-0 after the top of the third inning. Oscar Tejeda laced a two-run single and Mitch Dening had an RBI double as part of a five-run frame for the Sea Dogs. Dening finished 3-for-5 between both games. He reached in all four plate appearances in game one.
That lead would not last long as Hoes drilled his first home run of the night off Alex Wilson in the bottom of the third, cutting the lead in half at 6-3. After working out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings, the Sea Dogs finally caved to the pressure in the sixth. Caleb Joseph smacked a two-run homer against Kyle Fernandes. Then, Cesar Izturis drew a bases loaded walk against Blake Maxwell (3-3) to tie the game.
Maxwell continued to pitch into the eighth inning. Pedro Florimon drew a leadoff walk, the fourth allowed by Maxwell on the night. He moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, then to third on a ground out. Izturis followed with a bloop single for the walk-off win, dropping Portland to 0-5 in extra-inning contests this season. Armando Gabino (4-1) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win for Bowie in game one.
Hoes struck early in the second game, taking Michael Lee deep to centerfield for a 3-0 Baysox lead with just three batters having stepped up in the first inning. Greg Miclat and Izturis started the game off with back-to-back singles, setting up Hoes' long ball. Lee would not allow another run, stranding the bases loaded in the second and third innings.
The Sea Dogs put together a mini rally to take the lead. Drew Hedman drove in a run with a sac fly in the third. Then, Ryan Khoury followed with a two-out RBI single. Portland took the lead in the fifth inning against Raul Rivero (2-2) when Jeremy Hazelbaker sent a pitch over the right field wall, scoring himself and Hedman to make it 4-3 in favor of the Dogs.
The lead would not last long as the Baysox snatched the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth. Buck Britton walked leading off the inning against Eammon Portice (3-7). Brandon Waring followed with a double. Florimon drove in the tying run on a ground out and the winning run came in on a wild pitch by Portice. Brandon Cooney worked the ninth to get his ninth save in as many chances. Portland has now been swept in three doubleheaders this year.
The Sea Dogs continue their road trip with games against the Baysox tomorrow night and Thursday. After a three-game series in Richmond, Portland comes back for a six-game homestand against the Akron Aeros and Erie SeaWolves. The ZOOperstars will be in town for their second and final visit to Hadlock Field this year on August 9th. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
