(Richmond, VA)-Travis d'Arnaud went 2-for-4 with three RBI including two with a single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning as the Fisher Cats rallied for a 4-3 win over Richmond on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
New Hampshire (61-49) trailed 3-1 entering the ninth inning and facing the closer for the Flying Squirrels, Heath Hembree (0-1). Yan Gomes drilled a one-out double and Craig Stansberry came on to run for him. Jonathan Diaz then singled down the right field line to cut the lead to one run. After Adeiny Hechavarria struck out, Anthony Gose reached on an error. He took second and both Diaz and Gose scored on d'Arnaud's single to right to make it 4-3.
Richmond (60-50) threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting two men on base before Clint Everts struck out Skyler Stromsmoe to nail down the win for reliever Evan Crawford (2-3).
In the top of the first inning, Hechavarrialed off with a double and scored on a single by d'Arnaudto give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead.
Richmond came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Stromsmoe singled and scored on a triple into the left field corner by Francisco Peguero. Charlie Culberson's single plated Peguero to put the Flying Squirrels in front.
Richmond's shortstop Sharlan Schoop added a solo home run, hitting the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth inning over the left field fence to make it 3-1.
New Hampshire starter Joel Carreno worked the first seven innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out four.
Richmond's starter Chuck Lofgren allowed just one run in 7.1 innings. He allowed five hits, walked four and struck out four.
The Fisher Cats look for a sweep in Richmond on Thursday night at 7:05pm. RHP Chad Jenkins (2-4, 4.42) will start for New Hampshire against LHP Eric Surkamp (8-3, 2.05) for the Flying Squirrels. Radio coverage with Bob Lipman begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
The Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Tuesday, August 9 to play the Erie SeaWolves (Detroit AA) at 7:05pm. It will be Summer Reading Nightpresented by TD Bank.
