Burns Surpasses Newsom, Becomes Aeros Single-Season Saves Leader in Win Over Thunder

TRENTON, NJ - Right-handed pitcher Cory Burns surpassed Randy Newsom as the Akron Aeros single-season saves leader notching his franchise best 30th save of 2011 in the teams 3-2 win over the Trenton Thunder in game two of a three-game set Wednesday at Waterfront Park.

Newsom's mark of 29 saves stood for three seasons.

Left-handed pitcher Matt Packer tossed eight quality innings to record the win before giving way to Burns in the ninth. Packer allowed two earned runs on eight hits and struck out nine while walking none.

Left-hander Josh Romanski suffered the loss for Trenton pitching an inning and two thirds, allowing one earned run on one hit and striking out two while walking none.

The Aeros (57-54) jumped out in front in the top of the second inning. Chun Chen, Raul Padron and Michel Hernandez rapped three straight singles to open the frame. Kyle Bellows followed with an RBI single scoring Chen and giving the Aeros a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jordan Henry singled home Hernandez to make it 2-0.

It remained 2-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Thunder (57-53) battled back to tie it 2-2.

Juan Diaz hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning as Akron retook the lead 3-2 setting the stage for Burns' record-setting save.

The Aeros will go for the sweep of the Thunder on Thursday. Akron has yet to determine a starter for Thursday's contest. Trenton will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Shaeffer Hall, who is 10-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 2011.
