Curve's Final Cruise Series Night Makes "All the Right Moves"
August 3, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - While somewhat in the shadow of the iconic "Slapshot" when it comes to sports movies filmed in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, "All the Right Moves" will receive its due this Thursday (August 4) at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona - just 40 minutes away.
As the fourth and final installment of the Altoona Curve Summer Cruise Series, which features giveaways and activities in the theme of some of actor Tom Cruise's early films, "All the Right Moves" will be remembered for its local connection. The 1983 film, which stars Cruise, Craig T. Nelson, Lea Thompson, and Chris Penn and was set in an industrial town in Western Pennsylvania, was filmed almost entirely in and around Johnstown. The historic Point Stadium, the old Johnstown High School (Cochran High), Westmont Hilltop High School, the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center (Vo-Tech High), and houses in the East Conemaugh and Richland boroughs were among the primary scenes in the movie.
"Slapshot gets all of the notoriety and understandably so with the connection to the former Johnstown Chiefs," said Curve General Manager Rob Egan. "But, All the Right Moves was a good film in its own right and features a lot of area landmarks. It can be argued that this movie also helped launch Cruise's career. Not that I'll jump on a couch and proclaim that, but..."
In honor of All the Right Moves and the upcoming football season, the Curve will giveaway foam footballs to the first 500 adults 21 and over on Thursday. The footballs will not only make a fun collectible and something to toss around the yard, but will also be the final piece to qualify many fans for a drawing to win a cruise. Fans have previously had the opportunity to snag Aviator Sunglasses (Top Gun - June 16), Tighty Whitey Underwear (Risky Business - July 7), and Shotglasses (Cocktail - July 21) in the first three nights of the Nittany Travel Summer Cruise Series. Fans bringing all four giveaways back with them to the September 4 game at Blair County Ballpark will gain a guaranteed entry into the drawing.
In addition to the foam football giveaway, the Curve will be paying tribute to the film with skits, in-game contests, and video board segments featuring the pigskin. Curve front office and game day staff members will also be in football attire. Who knows' The team may even have "Rifleman" hold onto the ball instead of handing off to Salvucci.
