Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (60-50) had the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (61-49) down to their final strike before the Fisher Cats completed a three-run ninth-inning rally for a, 4-3, victory in front of 3,960 at The Diamond on Wednesday night.
Trailing the Squirrels 3-1 into the ninth inning, the Fisher Cats rallied off of Richmond closer Heath Hembree. Yan Gomes sparked the uprising with a one-out double to left-center field. Jonathan Diaz followed with a single into right field to close within a run. Hembree recovered to strike out Adeiny Hechavarria for the second out of the inning, bringing Anthony Gose to the plate. Gose hit a sharp one-hopper to the right of shortstop Sharlon Schoop. Schoop made the play with the glove and threw to first base. The ballgame appeared to be over, but Richmond first baseman Wes Hodges couldn't hang on to the throw, allowing the game to continue. Gose promptly took second base following the error. Travis d'Arnaud then played hero for New Hampshire with a two-run single into right field.
Hechavarria swatted a game-opening double to left-center field off of Richmond lefty Chuck Lofgren. A batter later, d'Arnaud lined a single off of the outstretched-mitt of Schoop. As the ball trickled into short-left field, Hechavarria raced in to give New Hampshire an early 1-0 advantage.
Richmond responded in the bottom of the third inning, wrenching the lead away with a pair of runs off of Fisher Cats' right-hander Joel Carreno. Skyler Stromsmoe got the Squirrels started with an inning-opening single. Francisco Peguero followed and cracked a triple up the left-field line. As the ball kicked around in the left-field corner, Stromsmoe scored all the way from first base to tie the game, 1-1. Charlie Culberson gave Richmond their first lead when he laced an RBI single into right field, scoring Peguero for a 2-1 edge.
Schoop extended the Squirrels' lead when he led off the fifth inning with a solo-home run to left field. Schoop's fourth of the season was a low-flying liner that just eclipsed the wall, stretching Richmond's advantage to 3-1.
Lofgren was sensational following the first-inning run, leaving with a 3-1 lead after 7 1/3 innings. He allowed only the lone run on five hits, walked four and struck out four. Hembree (0-1) endured his first loss and blown save of the season for the Squirrels. Left-hander Evan Crawford (2-3) earned the win in relief for New Hampshire, while right-hander Clint Everts recorded the final out for his second save in as many nights.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at The Diamond. LHP Eric Surkamp (8-3, 2.05) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP Chad Jenkins (3-4, 4.43) for the Fisher Cats. For tickets or more information, log on to SquirrelsBaseball.com.
