Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(New Britain, CT) - New Britain's 3B Matt Moses and RF Rene Tosoni each homered, leading the New Britain Rock Cats (4-8) to a 6-4 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (6-6) on Wednesday morning at New Britain Stadium. The two teams played just one game of the 3-game set due to rain - the 'Dogs finished their roadtrip at 2-3 and host the Connecticut Defenders on Thursday night.
Portland RHP Adam Mills (0-1) was roughed up for six runs on eight hits over 4 IP. New Britain used five pitchers and received 4 innings of one run ball from their bullpen. RHP Jay Rainville (1-1) beat Portland for the third time in his career, working 5+ innings on six hits and three runs. RHP Anthony Slama (2nd save) worked out of a second-and-third, no out jam, retiring SS Iggy Suarez (strikeout), CF Iggy Suarez (strikeout) and C Mark Wagner (groundout) to end the game. In the ninth inning, 3B Jorge Jimenez (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led off with a single and 2B Ryan Khoury doubled but the 'Dogs could not cash in.
Despite being down 6-0, the Sea Dogs managed a 2-spot off Rainville in the fifth inning. Portland had one baserunner (Wagner double in the fourth) through four frames but scored twice in the fifth when four consecutive batters reached base safely. RF Bubba Bell (2-for-4) singled and advanced to third base on double by DH Jon Still (1-for-3, RBI). Jimenez added 2 RBI's to his team-leading 13 by doubling off the right-field wall.
In the sixth inning, 1B Lars Anderson led-off the frame with a towering homer to right field. Rainville left the game and was relieved by RHP Zach Ward. Anderson finished 8-for-22 (.381) with 2 home runs on the trip. After LF Aaron Bates walked and Bell doubled, Still lifted a sacrifice fly to right field for Portland's final run. LHP Jose Lugo and RHP Rob Delaney combined for 2 scoreless innings before Slama recorded the final five outs.
New Britain jumped on the board in the second inning on LF Matt Moses' 3-run homer with two outs. In the third inning, the Rock Cats added a 2-out run on DH Erik Lis's run-scoring double. Mills was touched for a 2-run blast by Tosoni in the fourth inning to put New Britain in front 6-0. The Rock Cats had just two hits after the fourth inning. Portland's bullpen duo of LHP Dustin Richardson and RHP Bryce Cox combined to hurl four scoreless frames and strikeout four.
