New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats delighted a midweek crowd of 6,482 by jumping out to an early 6-0 lead today over visiting Portland - before turning the game over to their bullpen corps - and sure-handed First Baseman - to secure the 6-4 victory at New Britain Stadium

RHP Jay Rainville (1-1) picked up the victory for New Britain, going 5-plus innings. The Rhode resident retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, but was reached for 4 Hits and 2 Runs in the 5th and a solo HR in the 6th, which took him out of the game.

The offensive tone was set early when, in the 2nd inning, Rock Cats LF Matt Moses blasted a 3-Run HR over the right-field fence off Portland starter and loser, Alan Mills (0-1). Two frames later, New Britain RF Rene Tosoni launched a 2-Run shot off Mills, making the score 6-0.

The Sea Dogs hacked away, scoring 2 Runs in both the 5th and 6th innings. 1B Lars Anderson, thought to be Boston's top prospect, lofted a HR over the right-centerfield fence to open the 6th.

The last of four New Britain relievers to work in the game - RHP Anthony Slama - got himself into and out of trouble in the 9th. After surrendering two hits to start the inning placing runners at second and third, he struck out the next two batters before Portland's Mark Wagner hit a hard ground ball between Rock Cat 1B Whit Robbins and the bag. Robbins dove to his left and made a great stop, before tossing the ball to a covering Slama to record the exciting game's final out.
