Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders dropped both games of a doubleheader vs. New Hampshire 4-3 and 5-0 on a soggy Wednesday afternoon at Dodd Stadium.

In game 1, the Fisher Cats touched up Defenders starter RHP-Nick Pereira for four runs and then held off a late rally to hold on for the 4-3 victory.

Game 2 saw New Hampshire's bats come out on fire as they tallied up five runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 5-0 win, sweeping the double header.

Pereira gave up a leadoff homerun to 1B-Brian Dopirak to start the second inning and then a bases clearing double off the wall in left to CF-Sean Shoffit to fall behind 3-0. 2B-Brad Emaus would leadoff the top of the third inning with a solo homerun of his own to give New Hampshire the 4-3 advantage. Pereira (0-1) suffered his first loss in just his third start of the season giving up four earned runs off of five hits, walked four and struck out one in four innings of work.

In the fourth, the Defenders would battle back to load the bases via the walk and set up CF-Mike Mooney to deliver a bases clearing double over the left-fielder's head and trim the lead to just one, 4-3. That would be all the offense Connecticut would produce off of Fisher Cats starter Luis Perez.

Perez (2-1) picked up his second win of the season delivering five innings of three hit ball while giving up three runs, walked and struck out four.

New Hampshire took all momentum heading into game two as their bats continued to drive in runs and their starter RHP-Randy Boone kept Connecticut's offense silent.

The Fisher Cats jumped out in front yet again with an RBI base hit by 1B-David Cooper and a RF-Nick Gorneault double to give New Hampshire a 2-0 lead. Two more runs were added in the second inning on a homerun by SS-Luis Sanchez and another solo shot in the third inning by Dopirak, his second of the doubleheader to give the Fisher Cats a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Connecticut plated one run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single by RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve that drove in SS-Brian Bocock who singled earlier to get aboard. The Defenders would go on to load the bases and bring the representing tying run to the plate in 1B-Brett Pill but New Hampshire's reliever LHP-Edgar Estanga got Pill to pop up to first base and end the game at 5-1 Fisher Cats.

The Defenders saw a highlight reel in the loss when reliever, RHP-Dan Griffin struck out six consecutive Fisher Cats, four looking spanning the sixth and seventh innings.

Randy Boone (2-0) picked up his second win giving up one run off of six hits, walked three and struck out one over 6.2 innings. LHP-Jesse English (1-2) suffers his second loss in his first start. English gave up four runs, two earned off of five hits in just two innings.

Connecticut (5-8) travels to Portland tomorrow to take on the Sea Dogs (Red Sox) for a four game series. Catch all the action on Defenders Flagship Station, WICH 1310AM or online at ctdefenders.com.
