Portland Sea Dogs News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Sea Dogs completed a three-game series sweep of the Altoona Curve in convincing fashion, as they thumped the Curve, 11-3 on Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field.
The loss is the fourth consecutive defeat for Altoona.
After Portland (65-57) jumped out to an early 6-0 edge, the back-breaking hit for the Sea Dogs was a grand slam off the bat of Lars Anderson in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the Portland lead to 11-0 at the time.
Christian Castorri (1-3) made the start for the Curve and had trouble from get-go. The right-hander allowed five earned runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Pat Bresnehan was touched up for a run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings before Blair Johnson issued five runs, which included the Anderson grand slam, over 1 1/3 innings as well.
Portland southpaw Dave Gassner (6-5) pitched six scoreless innings to secure the victory.
The Curve (55-71) surged offensively in the top of the seventh, plating all three of their runs in the contest. Jonel Pacheco provided an RBI ground out to bring home the first Curve run, while an RBI double by James Boone and a run-producing single by Melvin Dorta accounted for the other Altoona scores.
Matt Capps, in his second rehab appearance with the Curve tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh and struck out two batters. Capps is expected to make an appearance with Indianapolis and likely will pitch return to the Curve and pitch for Altoona during their upcoming homestand at Blair County Ballpark.
The Curve return to action on Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. when they open a three-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays). Left-hander Kyle Bloom (3-7, 4.73) will take the hill and look to stop the Curve's slid, while the Fisher Cats will counter with righty Robert Ray (6-4, 3.01).
Altoona returns home to open a six-game homestand on Tuesday, August 19 at 7:05 p.m. Only ten Curve home games remain in the 2008 season. Fans looking to see the Curve before the season ends can get great seats over the phone at 877-99-CURVE, online at AltoonaCurve.com or in person at the Blair County Ballpark ticket windows.
