Connecticut Defenders News Release
AKRON. OH-The Defenders never had the chance to pull the broom out of the closet as they fell 2-1 to the Akron Aeros in the final game of the series. Connecticut took the series 2-1 in the two team's first series of the '08 season.
The Aeros struck first with a pair of consecutive doubles by Sardinha and Whitney to take an early 1-0 lead in the second. Akron added one more on a solo shot by Nathan Panther to lead off the fifth inning to grow the Aeros lead to 2-0 and that would hold up.
The combination of Martin, Lofgren and Newsom for the Aeros stifled the Defenders offense for just six hits and a lone run.
The Defenders had two premium opportunities in the game that never came to fruition. Kyle Haines lead the ballgame off with his fourth triple of the season, than Richardson lined one back to the pitcher Martin who snapped one to third base to double of Haines. The second chance came in the sixth with Maroul's lead off single then a controversial hit by pitch call on Richardson got two aboard. Martin would retire Rosario then give way for a lefty, lefty matchup between Lofgren and Witter in which Lofgren struck him out to keep the game 2-0 Aeros.
Connecticut would scrounge out a run off a sacrifice fly by Mike Mooney, his first hit of the series to make it a respectable 2-1 ballgame.
Snyder falls to 1-5 while throwing 6 innings of five hit ball, striking out and walking three. His counterpart in Martin had his longest outing of the season with a 5 and two thirds scoreless performance walking one and striking out four. The Defenders snapped a five gamewinning streak while Akron snapped their three game skid.
Connecticut heads to Erie, PA to take on the Erie Sea Wolves, AA affiliate of the Detroit Tigers in a three game set. Catch all the action on the Defenders Radio Network or at www.ctdefenders.com starting at 6:50 with the AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-game show.
