Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(TRENTON, NJ) - David Hernandez allowed two earned runs over five innings, picking up his eighth win and propelling the Baysox back into sole possession of first place for the first time since June 15. With the win, the Baysox improve to 73-52 and take a 1.0 game lead over Akron in the Southern Division.
The Baysox offense put up five runs in the third inning and Bowie never looked back. Jonathan Tucker led off the third with an infield single and moved to second when Blake Davis reached on a throwing error. Sebastien Boucher advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Carlos Rojas drove them both in with a single to center field. Nolan Reimold drew a walk to put runners on first and second before Matt Wieters delivered a double down the right field line, plating Rojas. Ryan Finan drove Reimold and Wieters in with a single to right to give Bowie a 5-0 lead. Mike Rodriguez hit a two-out single to right to advance Finan to third, but Jonathan Tucker grounded out to end the inning.
Bowie added another run in the fifth inning when Ryan Finan scored on a triple by Mike Rodriguez, and Bowie led 6-0.
Trenton finally got to David Hernandez in the sixth inning. Christopher Malec led off with a double to right field and Colin Curtis drew a walk. P. J. Pilittere lined an RBI single to right and Hernandez was done for the night. He left with runners on the corners and nobody out in the bottom of the sixth.
Ryan Keefer came on to relieve Hernandez and got Edwar Gonzaled to ground out. Curtis scored on the play to cut the lead to 6-2. Keefer got Kevin Russo to fly out for the second out of the inning before walking James Cooper and Reegie Corona to load the bases. Keefer got out of the inning by striking out Francisco Cervelli and the Thunder offense would be done for the night.
Keefer, Chad Thall and Gerrardo Casadiego would combine to throw 4.0 shutout innings of relief of Hernandez. Hernandez improved to 8-4 by winning his third straight start, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out five in the contest.
Bowie added four more runs in the top of the eighth off Thunder reliever Anthony Claggett. Sebastien Boucher led off with a walk and moved to third on a double by Carlos Rojas. Nolan Reimold drove both runners in with a single to right to give Bowie an 8-2 advantage. After a Matt Wieters walk, Jeff Nettles hit a one-out double to right to drive in Reimold and Wieters to give Bowie a 10-2 lead.
Bowie will play Trenton again Thursday night before heading home for a three game homestand against Binghamton Friday. The Baysox have only six regular season home games remaining this season, and will celebrate 80's prom night this Saturday at Prince George's Stadium. The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship.
