Harrisburg overcomes early 5-0 deficit with 14-hit barrage

Manchester, NH - It didn't look good for the Harrisburg Senators early Thursday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Their starting pitcher chased from the game, behind 5-0 and staring at a 20-inning offensive scoreless streak, the Senators erupted for 13 runs on 14 hits and beat the Fisher Cats, 13-11. Garrett Guzman clubbed a grand slam while LHP Tim Bittner delivered 5.1 innings of strong relief.

Harrisburg starting RHP Zack Segovia didn't make it out of the 1st inning. Kyle Phillips launched a two-out, three-run homer, but that was just the beginning of the Fisher Cats' onslaught. A double, catcher's interference and an error loaded the bases for Chris Gutierrez, who lined a two-run single to center to make it 5-0. After another catcher's interference call, Segovia was removed from the game; Bittner came on and finished the inning. Bittner provided valuable relief work, going 5.1 effective innings.

The Senators erupted for nine runs in the 3rd inning. The first five batters reached, including RBI singles by Seth Bynum and Marvin Lowrance to cut it to 5-2. After a strikeout, Bill Rhinehart and Devin Ivany laced RBI singles to make it a 5-4 game. Guzman followed with the big blow, a grand slam to right to give the Senators an 8-5 advantage. Later in the inning, Edgardo Baez scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-5. In all, 13 batters came to the plate.

The Fisher Cats got a solo homer from Andrew Pinckney in the bottom of the 3rd to cut it to a 9-6 margin. But the Senators threw another haymaker with four runs in the 5th inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Ian Desmond ripped a two-run double to make it 11-6. With the bases loaded and two out, Marco Yepez nailed a two-run single to center to increase the lead to 13-6. The Senators loaded the bases again but did not score.

In the 6th, Erik Kratz hit an RBI single for New Hampshire to make it 13-7. He drilled an RBI double in the 8th to cut it to 13-8 and David Smith followed with a run-scoring single to make it 13-9. In the bottom of the 9th, Jacob Butler hit a two-run homer to cut it to 13-11. The Fisher Cats brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but RHP Adam Carr found a way to end the game with the lead intact.

Bittner picked up the win to go to 2-4. RHP Brandon Magee, who blew the 5-0 lead, took the loss to fall to 6-12.

The Senators upped their record to 68-58. New Hampshire slipped to 55-71.

The Senators continue the ten-game road swing Friday against the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A Boston Red Sox) with LHP Cory VanAllen (3-2, 5.05 ERA) taking on Portland RHP Ryne Lawson (1-0, 4.09 ERA). Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
