Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Portland, ME) - Philadelphia Phillies' top pitching prospect RHP Kyle Drabek (8-2) beat Portland for the second time this season, hurling 7 scoreless frames in Reading's (67-56) 6-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (59-63) on Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Portland dropped two of three to the Phillies and lost their first rubber game at home since the opening weekend.
Drabek's lone jam was a lead-off double in the first inning by LF Daniel Nava as the hard throwing righty retired 18 of 21 batters faced. Nava, RF Jason Place and DH Lars Anderson all doubled for the three hits allowed by Drabek, who walked one and fanned four.
LHP Felix Doubront (7-5) lasted only 4.2 innings, scattering five hits on three unearned runs. Doubront walked three and fanned three. Reading scored all six runs with two outs - five were unearned.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Reading struck for three off Doubront. Former Sea Dog 2B Carlos Leon singled with one out and advanced to second base on a ground out. CF Quintin Berry drew a 2-out walk with LF Michael Spidale reaching base on an error by 3B Jorge Jimenez, allowing the first run to score. RF Dominic Brown followed with a 2-run triple to deep center field, scoring Berry and Spidale.
Reading scored two unearned runs off RHP Ryne Miller in the seventh inning, increasing their lead to 5-0. With one out, Berry reached on a bunt-single and advanced to second base on throwing error by Jimenez. Place dropped a fly ball off the bat of Spidale, putting runners at second and third. Portland committed their 3rd error of the night (four in the game) on 1B Kevin Mahar's run-scoring infield single. C Juan Apodaca fielded the single, which hit off the pitchers leg and fired it down the right-field line, allowing Spidale to score. The Phillies added the game's final run in the eighth inning on a 2-out RBI single from SS Ozzie Chavez.
RHP Alex Concepcion blanked Portland in the final two innings to wrap up Reading's 5th win in 7 games against Portland this season.
