August 20, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa - Gorkys Hernandez belted a two-run home run in the first inning and Daniel Moskos turned in another stellar outing scattering one unearned run on four hits over 7.0 innings in Altoona's 2-1 rain-shortened victory in the rubber match of a three-game series over the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Washington Nationals) at Metro Bank Park on City Island on Thursday afternoon.
After Brian Friday singled to lead off the game, Hernandez belted his fourth home run in a Curve uniform give Altoona (52-72) an early 2-0 edge. That was all the Moskos would need as the Pirates' 2007 first-round draft choice cruised to his second-straight win.
The unearned run that Moskos allowed came across in the bottom of the first inning when Friday dropped a pop up in shallow center field to permit Harrisburg's (58-64) only run of the afternoon.
After heavy rains dumped on the Metro Bank Park surface for more than an inning, the umpires decided to call for the tarp on the field in the top of the eighth. Despite a valiant effort by the grounds crew, they were unable to completely cover the field with the tarp, as a good portion of home plate and the third base line was left uncovered and the game was called after the mandatory half hour wait period.
The win for Altoona will save fans an additional dollar on the team's second Road to Savings promotion. For each win the Curve accumulate on their current seven-game road trip, fans will save $1 (up to a max of five wins) on Terrace and Grandstand Level seats for the Wednesday, August 26 game at 6:35 p.m. game against the Trenton Thunder (AA - New York Yankees) at Blair County Ballpark. Currently savings is $2, which means Grandstand level seats are $4 while Terrace level seats are $6.
The Altoona Curve will continue their road trip on Friday night when they open up a four-game series at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie against the Baysox (AA - Baltimore Orioles). LHP Donnie Veal (0-0, 0.00) will make a major league rehab start for the Curve with RHP Yoslan Herrera (9-1, 3.29) to follow in relief in a "piggy back" role. Bowie will counter with RHP Tyohei Tanaka (3-2, 2.34).
First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with radio coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network Affiliates.
NOTES:
** Moskos becomes the first Curve pitcher since 2007 to enjoy a 10+ win season. RHP Luis Munoz (12 wins) and RHP Kip Bouknight (11 wins) were the last to accomplish the feat.
** With the win, the Curve have grabbed another series victory and are now 6-2-2 in series since the All Star break.
