Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves bullpen stepped up to the task on Thursday night in Trenton as they shut out the Thunder 2-0 to win the final game of the series at Waterfront Park.
Erie starter Pat Stanley came out to work in the bottom of the first inning but never threw a pitch in the game. Stanley was lifted due to injury and the Howlers were forced to go with their bullpen the entire game.
It started with righty Jared Gayhart who began the first for the âWolves. Gayhart allowed two hitters to reach on a walk and catchers interference in the bottom of the first but battled through with no damage. He would end up working five innings, his longest outing of the season, shutting out the Thunder allowing just one hit. Gayhart struck out a season-high six, including four of the last six he faced and the side in order in the fifth. He picked up his first Double-A win and is 1-0 on the season.
Cody Satterwhite was next in line and he came in to work in the sixth. Satterwhite, making his second appearance since returning from the disabled list, did not disappoint as he tossed three scoreless innings. In the sixth, Eduardo Nunez singled with two outs but Satterwhite got through with no damage as he got Chris Malec to fly out to end the inning. Beginning with Malec, Satterwhite would retire seven straight taking the game to the ninth. He struck out three.
Brett Jensen, Erie's third reliever of the game came in to work the ninth. He induced a fly ball of the bat of Matt Cusick for the first out before giving up a single to Nunez. Nunez had two of the three Trenton hits in the game. Jensen then retired Malec and Edwar Gonzalez to pick up his 12th save of the season. It was the first save for Jensen since July 21 against Akron.
Both of Erie's runs came in the third inning against Trenton starter Ryan Pope. Pope had not allowed a run in each of his last two starts but that changed in the top of the third. Cale Iorg broke an 0-for-14 streak at the plate with a one-out single to center. Danny Worth was then hit by a pitch putting a pair on for the top of the lineup. Pope struck out leadoff hitter Shawn Roof for the second out bringing Deik Scram to the plate. Scram softly grounded to the second baseman Cusick who got to the ball but had no one to throw to at first as Trenton was late covering. Scram would beat the eventual throw and Iorg would beat the throw to the plate by Malec giving Erie a 1-0 lead. Brennan Boesch followed with a single to left, scoring Worth for a 2-0 lead. The RBI for Boesch was his team-leading 83rd of the season.
