
Sea Dogs Announce 2008 Team Awards

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, presented their annual team awards for the 2008 season prior to today's final regular season home game. The team awards are voted on by the fans and made possible by Irving Oil and Creative Awards. The team awards are handed out in four different categories: Most Valuable Player, Pitcher of the Year, 10th Player Award and Citizen of the Year. The 2008 award winners are:
- Most Valuable Player: Zach Daeges
- Pitcher of the Year: Michael Bowden
- 10th Player Award: Mickey Hall
- Citizen of the Year: Iggy Suarez
Most Valuable Player - Zach Daeges .307 AVG. 34 2B 3 3B 6 HR 63 RBI
Outfielder Zach Daeges has appeared in 108 games for the Sea Dogs in 2008 hitting .307, which ranks 4th in the Eastern League. Daeges leads the Sea Dogs with 34 doubles, which is the second best in the Eastern League and two shy of the Sea Dogs franchise record held by Brandon Moss. Daeges is currently second on the team with 121 hits and 63 RBIs and leads the team in on base percentage, .412, ranking him second in the Eastern League. The 24 year-old was selected to the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for May 2008 where he hit .414 in 26 games. Daeges had the 3rd longest on base streak in the Eastern League this season reaching base safely in 32 straight games from April 9th-June 2nd. Daeges was drafted by the Red Sox in the 6th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Pitcher of the Year - Michael Bowden 9-4 2.33 ERA 101 SO
Right-handed pitcher Michael Bowden appeared in 19 games for the Sea Dogs posting a 9-4 record with a 2.33 ERA and 101 strikeouts. The 21 year-old was selected to the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game. Bowden was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket on July 21st and made his Major League Debut on August 30th where he earned the win giving up only 2 earned runs. At the time of his promotion to Triple-A Bowden ranked second in the league in both ERA (2.33) and strikeouts (101). He led the Sea Dogs in wins this season with 9. Bowden ranks 8th in franchise history in career ERA (3.27), tenth in wins (17) and tenth in games started (38). The Aurora, Illinois native was the fifth pick of the Red Sox (47th overall) in the sandwich round (between first and second rounds) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
10th Player Award - Mickey Hall .232 AVG 16 2B 2 3B 13 HR 35 RBI
Outfielder Mickey Hall began the season with Single-A Lancaster and was promoted to Portland on April 24th. In 81 games with the Sea Dogs this season, Hall has hit 16 doubles, two triples, and 13 home runs while driving in 35 runs. He is tied for the team lead in home runs with 13, six of which have come in August. He homered in four consecutive games from August 10th-15th He tied a Sea Dogs team record by collecting three doubles in a game on June 28th. His first two Double-A hits were home runs. Hall has played all three outfield positions and has committed just two errors. The 23 year-old Marietta, Georgia native was a 2nd-round pick of the Red Sox in the June 2003 Draft.
Citizen of the Year - Iggy Suarez .242 AVG. 23 2B 0 3B 5 HR 50 RBI
Infielder Iggy Suarez has appeared in a team high 124 games with the Sea Dogs this season. Suarez is leads the team in stolen bases with 15 and ranks third on the team with 104 hits, and 23 doubles. Suarez gave the fans a reason to cheer in August when he collected two walk-off hits within four days of each other against Altoona and Harrisburg as the Sea Dogs swept a six game homestand.
This is the second consecutive season that Suarez has been selected as Portland's Citizen of the Year. Suarez could often be found staying long after games signing autographs for all the fans who wanted one. The 27-year-old Suarez frequently volunteered for public appearances, clinics and camp visits. He also made a special appearance at the Hood Kids Club book reading. During these appearances he shared his experiences in life and as a baseball player as well the importance of education and teamwork with the fans. His constant efforts make him a welcomed addition to the Sea Dogs organization both on and off the field.
The Portland Sea Dogs have advanced to the Eastern League Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Portland will face the Trenton Thunder in the Eastern League Northern Division Championship Series. The best-of-five series gets under way on Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:05 PM in Trenton, New Jersey. Games three and four (if necessary) will be played at Hadlock Field on Friday, September 5th at 7:00 PM and Saturday, September 6th at 6:00 PM.
