Trenton Beats Connecticut 4-3 in Regular Season Finale at Waterfront Park

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Second baseman Reegie Corona had the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning to lift the Thunder to a 4-3 win over Connecticut on Monday afternoon at Waterfront Park. Trenton won three games in the four-game series, and finished the 2008 regular season 86-54.

Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Trenton Right fielder James Cooper led of the inning with a triple off of Connecticut reliever Ronnie Ray (6-4). Corona followed with an RBI single to put Trenton on top 4-3. Corona finished the game 2 x 3 with two RBI and a double. Trenton reliever Michael Dunn (1-0) picked up the win in his Thunder debut. He tossed 1 2/3 innings and allowed one hit. Trenton reliever Jose Valdez struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the season.

With Trenton down 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Thunder scored two runs to take the lead. Third baseman Kevin Russo reached base to start the inning on an error by Connecticut Shortstop Julio Cordido. Catcher P.J. Pilittere followed with a single to put runners at first and second base with no outs. After a fly out by First baseman Chris Malec, Designated hitter Edwar Gonzalez connected on an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Cooper then walked to load the bases for Corona. Corona proceeded to lift a sacrifice fly RBI to give Trenton a 2-1 lead. The Thunder tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Malec. In the seventh inning, Connecticut tied the game at 3-3 on a two-run single by Catcher Adam Witter.

Thunder Starting pitcher Humberto Sanchez pitched one inning in his Thunder debut. He allowed one run and two hits. Garcia scattered four hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked six. Connecticut Starting pitcher Joey Martinez tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings in a no-decision.

Trenton has an off day on Tuesday, before beginning the Eastern League Playoffs on Wednesday night against the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. RHP Eric Hacker (7-4, 2.76) will start for Trenton. Portland Starting pitcher is TBA.
