New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Portland, ME- Robert Ray allowed one run over six innings to earn his team-leading eighth victory, and J.P. Arencibia went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats closed out the 2008 season with a 4-1 victory over the playoff-bound Portland Sea Dogs on Monday afternoon at Hadlock Field.
Portland (74-66) captured a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Tony Granadillo (1-for-3, BB, R) walked, advanced to third on a Mickey Hall (1-for-4) single and scored when Ray uncorked a wild pitch on a strikeout of Jered Stanley (0-for-4).
New Hampshire (61-81) rallied to take the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Dustin Richardson had thrown 5.1 hitless innings until Jonathan Diaz (1-for-2, 3B, BB, 2 R) and Chris Gutierrez (1-for-3, 3B, SAC, RBI, R) cracked back-to-back triples, tying the game, 1-1. One out later, Arencibia (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) lined a single to center, scoring Gutierrez to put the Fisher Cats ahead, 2-1.
Facing reliever Chad Rhoades, Diaz drew a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth inning, moved to second base on Gutierrez's sac bunt, then scored on a pair of Rhoades wild pitches for a 3-1 lead. Ryan Patterson (1-for-4, R) singled and scored when Arencibia smashed an RBI double off the wall in right for a 4-1 lead. Arencibia finished the season with 43 RBIs for the Fisher Cats and 105 overall RBIs to lead all Toronto Blue Jays' Minor Leaguers.
Ray (8-6) allowed one run on four hits in six innings to earn the win, fanning seven and walking two. Ray's eight victories are tied for fourth most in New Hampshire single-season history, and his 13 overall victories this season give him a share of the organization's lead.
Jason Burch, Seth Overbey and Zach Dials each pitched a shutout inning of relief, with Dials recording a perfect ninth inning for his 15th save, tied for third in single-season Fisher Cats' history and fourth in all-time club history. It was Dials' first save since July 19.
Richardson (7-10) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings. The left-hander matched a career high with 11 strikeouts and walked one.
