RHP Humberto Sanchez joins Thunder for Major League Rehab stint

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that LHP Michael Dunn and RHP Christian Garcia have been promoted from Tampa (High-A) to Trenton. RHP Humberto Sanchez has been added to Thunder roster for a Major League Rehabilitation Assignment. Sanchez will start for Trenton on Monday and pitch one inning. Garcia will follow Sanchez's start. LHP Zach Kroenke and RHP Oneli Perez have been promoted from Trenton to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A).

Dunn has spent the entire season with Tampa. He is 4-7 with a 4.55 ERA in 30 games (22 starts) for Tampa. His last seven appearances have been out of the bullpen. In 124 2/3 innings, he has struck out 118 and walked 58. He is third in the Florida State League in strikeouts. He entered the season as the 25th rated prospect in the Yankees Minor League System according to Baseball America. In 2007, he was 12-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 27 starts for Charleston (Low-A). He was ninth in the South Atlantic League in ERA, and fifth in games started. He has also spent parts of the 2005 and 2006 season as an outfielder. He has career batting average of .160 in 66 games. He was originally selected by the Yankees in the 33rd round of the 2004 draft out of the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Sanchez has spent time with both the GCL Yankees and Tampa this season. He is 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 12 games (nine starts) with the GCL Yankees. He tossed a total of 11 2/3 innings in the 12 games. He struck out 15 and walked four. He has made two starts with Tampa and is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two total innings. He entered the 2008 season as the 12th rated prospect in the Yankees Minor League System according to Baseball America. He is on the Yankees 40-man roster. He missed all of the 2007 season because of Tommy John surgery. He was acquired by the Yankees from the Detroit Tigers along with RHP Anthony Claggett and RHP Kevin Whelan for OF Gary Sheffield in November 2006. He split the 2006 season between Erie (Double-A) and Toledo (Triple-A). He went 5-3 with a 1.76 ERA in 11 starts for Erie. He had a 5-3 record with a 3.86 ERA in nine starts for Erie. He was originally drafted by Detroit in 31st round of the 2001 draft.

Garcia has split the season between Tampa and the GCL Yankees. He was 0-2 with a 14.73 ERA in three starts for the GCL Yankees. He is 4-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 10 starts for Tampa. He has recorded 60 strikeouts and walked only 17 in 49 2/3 innings. Garcia missed all of the 2007 season because of right elbow surgery. He had entered the 2006 season ranked as the Yankees sixth-best prospect according to Baseball America. He split the 2006 season between the GCL Yankees and Charleston (Low-A). He went 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA for the GCL Yankees. He was 2-3 with a 3.46 ERA in seven starts for Charleston. He was selected by the Yankees in the third round of the 2004 draft.

Kroenke is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was 6-0 with a 3.09 ERA in 37 games for Trenton, including one save. He was 5-0 with a 2.19 ERA in 19 appearances at Waterfront Park. Since the All-Star break, Kroenke had a 2-0 record with a 1.93 ERA in nine games for the Thunder. Opponents were only hitting .187 against him. Last season, Kroenke split the season between Tampa (High-A) and Trenton. He was 0-1 with a 9.42 ERA in 15 games for the Thunder. He went 2-2 with a 2.27 ERA in 29 games for the Yankees. Kroenke was originally a fifth round selection by the Yankees in the 2005 draft.

Perez has split the season between Trenton, Charlotte (Triple-A) in the Chicago White Sox Organization, and Buffalo (Triple-A) in the Cleveland Indians Organization. He was claimed by the Yankees off waivers on 6/19 and assigned to Trenton. He was designated for assignment 6/29, cleared waivers on 7/2, and out-righted to Trenton. He is 2-2 with a 3.48 ERA in 17 games (one start) for the Thunder. He allowed eight earned runs in his first five games, but just four earned runs in his last 12 games. He started on Friday night vs. Connecticut and struck out nine in four innings of work. Perez was 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA in 14 G for Charlotte. He was claimed off waivers by the Indians on 5/19 and assigned to Buffalo. He was 0-0 with a 7.11 ERA and 2 SV for Buffalo. He entered the season as the 24th best prospect in the White Sox Minor League System. Last season, Perez had a 6-2 record with a 2.10 ERA and 16 SV in 59 G for Birmingham (Double-A) in the White Sox Organization. He was originally signed as a non-drafted FA by the San Diego Padres on 2/15/01.
