Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Harrisburg, PA) - The Baysox came up short in their regular season finale, falling by a score of 13-7 in Harrisburg Monday afternoon. The Senators pummeled Baysox pitching for 13 runs on 16 hits, including 4 homeruns on the afternoon. Nolan Reimold homered in his second consecutive game to give him 25 for the season and Carlos Rojas went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI in the loss. Bowie will return home and prepare to start the playoff Wednesday against Akron.
The Baysox struck first in the top of the first inning on a one-out single by Carlos Rojas and a two-run homerun from Nolan Reimold. It was the second game in a row Reimold has hit a two-run shot in the first inning to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.
The Senators answered back with four unanswered runs in their next two turns at bat. Ian Desmond led off the bottom of the first with a solo homerun to cut the Bowie lead in half. They scored three more runs in the second inning when Bill Rhinehart drew a leadoff walk. Javi Herrera hit a single to put runners on the corners and Garrett Guzman got a base hit to drive Rhinehart home. Seth Bynum hit a sacrifice bunt to put men on second and third with one out and Desmond grounded out to bring Herrera in. Mike Daniel hit a single to center to plate Guzman and give the Senators a 4-2 lead before Zach Clark retired the side.
The Baysox picked up another run in the top of the third on an RBI single by Matt Wieters to put Bowie within a run.
Harrisburg came back with three more runs in the bottom of the third after Clark retired the first two batters of the inning. Bill Rhinehart came up with two out and the bases empty and hit his seventh homerun of the year to right-center field. Javi Herrera drew a walk and Garrett Guzman doubled him home. Seth Bynum got another double to drive Guzman in and make the score 7-3 Senators before Felix Romero came on to strike out Desmond to end the inning.
Bowie scratched out two more runs in the top of the fourth. Ryan Finan was hit by pitch to lead off the inning and Blake Davis got a one-out single to put runners on first and second. Jonathan Tucker grounded out to second base, but advanced the runners for Carlos Rojas who got a two-run single to left field to make it 7-5 Harrisburg.
The Senators bats were too much for the Baysox, as Harrisburg went on to score six more unanswered runs. Marvin Lowrance hit a three-run bomb in the bottom of the fourth and Desmond added his second solo shot of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Ofilio Castro doubled in the final two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 13-7 before the onslaught abated.
With the loss, the Baysox finish the regular season with a record of 84-58, winning the Southern Division title and tying a franchise record for wins in a season. The Baysox look to improve on that by breaking a franchise record and winning an Eastern League championship. The first step begins with game one of a best-of-five series against the Akron Aeros Wednesday night in Bowie as Baysox RHP Jason Berken (12-4, 3.58 ERA) goes up against Aeros LHP Scott Lewis (6-2, 2.33 ERA).
The Baysox have clinched home field advantage in the first series of the playoffs by winning the Southern Division title Thursday. The Baysox will host games 1 and 2 of the best-of-five series against the Akron Aeros Wednesday, September 3 and Thursday, September 4 with each game starting at 7:05 p.m. The teams will then head to Akron for game 3 and possibly game 4. Should a fifth and decisive game be necessary, it would be played back in Bowie on Sunday, September 7.
The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship. Playoff tickets are available now on www.baysox.com or by calling the box office at (301) 464-4865.
