Nats Call Up Four Former Senators

September 1, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release

Harrisburg, PA - The Washington Nationals called up several players on Monday, four of whom were members of the Harrisburg Senators' 2008 Opening Day roster. LHP Mike Hinckley and RHP Shairon Martis are set to make major-league debuts while RHP Levale Speigner and OF Roger Bernadina return to the nation's capital.

For Hinckley, it has been a long climb back toward the top. Originally a 3rd-round pick by the Expos in the 2004 draft, he was a top prospect until 2005, when a shoulder strain temporarily sidetracked his career. Hinckley turned things around in 2008. The 25-year-old went 5-3 with a 5.12 ERA mostly out of the bullpen for the Senators. He was promoted to Triple-A Columbus in early July and went 0-2 with a save and a 3.16 ERA for the Clippers.

Martis, 21, just returned from Beijing, China, where he pitched for Team Netherlands in the Olympics. He was acquired from the Giants in 2006 in a trade for LHP Mike Stanton. After finishing second in the Carolina League with 14 wins last season, Martis went 4-4 with a 3.98 ERA in 14 starts for the Senators. Promoted to Columbus in mid-June, he went 1-2 with a 3.02 ERA with the Clippers.

Speigner, 27, made the Nationals' Opening Day roster last year, but was assigned to Harrisburg to open this season. He dominated when healthy, allowing just one run in 14.2 innings of relief work. Since a callup to Columbus in early June, Speigner went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA.

Bernadina, 24, hit .323 with 26 stolen bases for the Senators. He was called directly from Harrisburg to Washington in late June and went just 5-for-40 at the plate. Bernadina was sent down to Columbus in mid-July and tore through the International League with a .351 batting average, 20 extra-base hits and 15 stolen bases in 47 games.

Monday was September 1st, which means active MLB rosters expanded to 40 players.

The Senators finished their season Monday with an 11-7 victory over the Southern Division champion Bowie Baysox. Harrisburg went 73-69, its first winning season since 2002.
