Buffalo Bisons News Release
Luke Scott hit a grand slam and Darin Barton added his second home run as a Bison to lift the Herd over the Chiefs, 8-6, on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Matt Hague collected three more hits to add to the support for Matt Boyd in the southpaw's first Triple-A win.
Scott's slam, Buffalo's second of the season, came as part of a five-run Bisons' third inning that made quick work of an early 2-0 Syracuse lead. The Herd opened the frame with four straight singles with Hague's second of three hits on the night driving in Jonathan Diaz from third. That loaded the bases for the veteran Scott, who jumped all over a first-pitch strike from Chiefs' starter A.J. Cole and drove the ball over the wall in right field.
The home run was Scott's second with the Herd, giving him 15 RBI in 26 games with the club since signing as a free agent in May. Chris Dickerson hit the other Bisons grand slam this season in a 16-2 victory over Toledo on May 16.
The 5-2 advantage held until the game moved to the bullpens. As the road team, Buffalo was able to stay one step ahead of the Chiefs. The Bisons scored a solo run in the top of the sixth inning on a walk and two Syracuse fielding errors. The Chiefs answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to close to within 6-3.
Each team scored two more in the seventh, but Barton's two-run home run gave the Bisons enough insurance to hold off the late Chiefs' rally. Syracuse actually out-hit the Herd in the game, 15-11.
Boyd worked the first five innings on the mound for his first Triple-A win. The 24-year old allowed two runs in five innings, but more importantly he didn't walk a batter for the second straight start. Boyd struck out four batters
The Bisons bullpen gave up four runs on the night, but Bobby Korecky nailed down the win with a shutout ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
