The sun played a factor in the first inning of Friday's game. Jason Bourgeois led off against Wings starterTaylor Rogers with a fly ball to right field, and the right fielder Wilkin Ramirez missed a chance to catch it with the ball falling in for a single. Rogers set down the next three batters to strand the runner.
Red Wings shortstop Danny Santana opened the bottom half of the first against Keyvius Sampson with a line drive at first baseman Steve Selsky - who shielded his eyes with his glove trying to locate the hit. The ball glanced off Selsky's glove and into shallow right field, and Santana hustled his way to a double. But Sampson used a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning without any damage.
The Wings loaded the bases after two outs in the second, with Sampson issuing back-to-back walks. Rochester hitters were 20-for-42 (.476) with bases full so far this season, but Sampson got a fly out from James Beresford to end the threat.
In the top of the third, after a walk by Irving Falu and a single by Steve Selsky put two runners on base, catcher Eric Fryer made an error trying to pick off Selsky at first base. The ball rolled all the way into the right field corner and Falu scored from second to give the Bats a 1-0 lead. Selsky was injured on the play while sliding into third base and left the game. Rogers walked another batter after that, but he got the double play ground out he needed to get out of the inning.
After allowing base runners in the first two innings, Sampson set down the Wings batters 1-2-3 in the third.
After a long top of the third, Rogers made very quick work of the Bats hitters in the fourth, setting them down 1-2-3 while only throwing seven pitches.
The Bats threatened in the top of the fifth. Ryan LaMarre began the inning with a single to right field. Bourgeois followed with a bunt single to first base. After a sacrifice by Falu for the first out of the inning, the Wings defense helped out Rogers as LaMarre was caught in a rundown and tagged trying to score on a squeeze bunt play. Rogers struck out Josh Satin to end the inning.
The Wings responded on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. Doug Bernier drew a lead-off walk. Santana followed that up with a single to right-center field. A throwing error by LaMarre advanced Santana to second. Beresford chose the right time to extend his hitting streak, as he dropped a single into left field after a nine-pitch at bat. Both Bernier and Santana scored to put the Wings up 2-1. Beresford's streak now sits at six games. Sampson recorded three straight outs to work his way out of trouble.
In the top of the seventh, the Bats picked up a pair of hits to open the frame, and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third base with one out. That prompted a pitching change, with Logan Darnell coming out of the bullpen to relieve Rogers. Falu greeted Darnell with a single up the middle past the drawn-in infield, making it a 2-2 Wings lead. When Josciel Veras followed with a single, the Bats had the lead 3-2 and Mark Hamburger came in to replace Darnell. Hamburger got two quick outs to strand two baserunners.
Rogers worked 6 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned), with three walks and four strikeouts. Rogers threw 105 pitches, 69 for strikes.
The Wings came right back in the bottom of the seventh, when Bernier and Santana had consecutive singles to put runners at the corners with no outs agains Sam LeCure. Beresford looped a single over shortstop, plating Bernier for a 3-3 tie. Fryer drew a walk to load the bases for Danny Ortiz, and Ortiz ripped a bases-clearing triple to put the Wings ahead 6-3. That ended LeCure's time on the mound, bringing Drew Hayes out of the bullpen. A sacrifice fly from Rey Rodriguez brought in Ortiz for a 7-3 Wings advantage.
Hamburger set down all five batters he faced, and A.J. Achter worked the ninth inning.
Santana had three hits and two runs scored, and Beresford had three hits and three RBI for the Wings. Fryer went 0-for-3 with two walks, ending hishitting streak at 10 games.
