Carolina Mudcats News Release

ZEBULON, NC - Jacob Schrader ignited a five run rally with a solo home run in the fifth, Connor Lien added a RBI double in the same inning and Justin Jackson pitched four no-hit innings out of the bullpen as the Mudcats defeated the Blue Rocks 8-2 on Monday night at Five County Stadium.

Matthrew Strahm started for visiting Wilmington (50-44, 12-12) and was perfect through four before allowing Schrader's ninth home run of the season in the fifth. The solo blast to left-center was the first hit of the game for Carolina (46-48, 12-13) and the first of five runs in the inning. Schrader was 2-for-4 with two runs in the series tying victory.

Max Povse started for Carolina and left before the second after allowing two runs and one hit in the first. Povse hit leadoff man Jack Lopez to start the game and then walked second place batting Humberto Arteaga. Mauricio Ramos followed Arteaga with a RBI single and the Blue Rocks took a 1-0 lead. Ryan O'Hearn then forced in another run after hitting into a double play.

Wilmington led 2-0 after its half of the first and Strahm (L, 1-1, 2.86) went on to retire the first 12 he faced in consecutive order. Povse, meanwhile, left after the first and Jackson took over out of the bullpen.

Jackson (W, 3-0, 2.59) walked the first batter he faced in the second, but was able to eventually get out of the inning by inducing a double play. Jackson retired 11 straight following the walk and did not allow a hit over four scoreless innings pitched. He finished with three strikeouts and turned in the longest relief outing of the season for Carolina's bullpen.

The Mudcats gave Jackson a lead following his final half inning of work in the fifth with a five run outburst against Strahm. Carlos Franco followed Schrader's leadoff home run with a walk and scored moments later on a double by Jose Briceno to tie the game at 2-2. Reed Harper squeezed in Briceno from third two batters later and Lien brought in two more with a double to right.

The Mudcats scored five runs and collected three hits in the fifth. The Blue Rocks were charged with two errors in the inning and only two of the five runs were earned to Strahm. Lien was 1-for-4 with two RBI in the victory and has hit safely in nine straight games.

Strahm pitched through the fifth and allowed five runs (two earned) on three hits and took the loss. Yender Caramo pitched the final three innings and gave up three runs and allowed three hits in the eighth before finishing the game. Dustin Peterson, Schrader and Franco each had consecutive run scoring hits in the eighth for Carolina.

Reliever Andrew Waszak entered in place of Jackson in the sixth and worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Mudcats. Waszak allowed one hit and struck out three in his appearance. Left-hander Kyle Kinman worked the ninth and allowed two hits in between striking out three in the final inning to finish the game.

The victory lifted the Mudcats into a series tie at 1-1 with the Blue Rocks. The finale of the three game series is scheduled for Tuesday morning beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Five County Stadium. Carolina will have RHP Wes Parsons on the mound for the game three start.
