LAST TIME OUT: Lynchburg dropped a de facto doubleheader against the Winston-Salem Dash on Sunday afternoon...The Dash crushed three home runs in the first game to erase a 3-1 Lynchburg lead and shutout the Hillcats in the second contest...Resuming a game that was originally suspended on June 27, the Hillcats took the field as the home team on the road at BB&T Ballpark with a 3-1 lead...MITCH BROWN began the game on the mound replacing DACE KIME, who was the original starter for the Hillcats, and surrendered a solo home run to the first batter he faced, CLEULUIS RONDON, that brought the Dash within one, 3-2...Both pitchers were locked in on the mound throughout the game...MITCH BROWN settled in after the solo shot by RONDON and at one point retired 11 straight batters...BROWN ran into some trouble in the top of the eighth when he allowed a solo home run to ADAM ENGEL that tied the game at three...He then walked back-to-back batters before KEON BARNUM smashed a three-run home run to left field that gave the Dash a 6-3 lead...BRANDON BRENNAN, who originally started the game for Winston-Salem, picked up right where he left off and held the Hillcats scoreless until he was replaced in the bottom of the eighth inning...Relief pitcher PETER TAGO gave up a RBI double to LUIGI RODRIGUEZ that brought Lynchburg back within two, but it wasn't enough as TAGO held on for another inning to pick up his seventh save of the year...Both pitchers made their first Carolina League start in the nightcap...Dash pitcher SPENCER ADAMS was promoted from Low-A Kannapolis Sunday and wasted no time in making an immediate impact in the Dash rotation...In his first career start in Winston-Salem, ADAMS held the Hillcats scoreless through six innings and allowed just three hits while walking one and striking out five to earn the shutout win...PERCI GARNER had appeared in two games for the Hillcats this season, both in relief, but struggled in his first start...The right-hander worked through five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out five batters...In the bottom of the third, ADAM ENGEL reached on a single, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by SICNARF LOOPSTOK...He scored on a wild pitch byGARNER to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead...NICK BASTO led off the fourth inning with a single and was brought home on a RBI double by NOLAN EARLEY to extend the lead to 2-0...The final run came in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by TREY MICHALCZEWSKI that scored ADAM ENGEL for the second time to put the Dash up 3-0...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: Lynchburg is 5-6 against the Dash this season...Lynchburg swept Winston-Salem in a four-game series in its first visit to City Stadium this year, but have lost four in a row since...It marked the first four-game series sweep by the Hillcats against the Dash since August 14-17, 2003...Lynchburg and Winston-Salem will meet a total of 16 times in 2015...Lynchburg is 1-3 on the road at BB&T Ballpark this season...1B NELLIE RODRIGUEZ is 12-for-33 (.364) against the Dash this season with three doubles, a triple, three home runs, nine RBIs, and seven runs scored in eight games...His slugging percentage is .788, and his OPS is a staggering 1.276 versus Winston-Salem this season...For Winston-Salem, All-Star catcher OMAR NARVAEZ is 13-for-29 (.448) but does not have an extra base hit with only two RBIs in eight contests.
SO MANY HITS, NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT: In the resumption of the suspended game, the Hillcats cranked out 11 hits, but came up short in a 6-4 loss...Lynchburg has lost 10 games this season when recording double-digit hits...However, on the season, the Hillcats are still 24-10 when they crank out double digit hit totals...Two of those 10 losses have come against Winston-Salem, the last came on June 26 when the Hillcats recorded 10 hits in a 6-4 loss to the Dash.
BACK ON TRACK: With a 1-for-3 night at the plate last night against Winston-Salem, CLINT FRAZIER extended his consecutive on-base streak to 26 games...During that span, FRAZIER has seen his on-base percentage jump 29 points from .332 to .361...The streak by FRAZIER set his longest of the season...He owns the two longest on-base streaks this season for the Hillcats as he also recorded a 19 game consecutive on-base streak earlier this season...NELLIE RODRIGUEZ has the third longest streak, reaching base in 16 straight games...Myrtle Beach's CHESNY YOUNG is currently on a 38 game on-base streak, which is a Carolina League record...The Indians No. 2 prospect seems to have found his swing once again as he has recorded a multi-hit game for in three of his last four contests...Over his last eight, FRAZIER has quietly racked up an eight-game hit streak and has raised his batting average from .255 up a full 16 points to .271.
NOT CHRISTMAS IN JULY: The month of July has not been kind to the Hillcats...After posting a .266 batting average as a team in June, Lynchburg has only hit .251 as a team through 18 games in July...During the mid-summer stretch, the Hillcats are just 7-11 and have lost seven of their last eight contests...CLINT FRAZIER leads all active Hillcats with a .379 average this month...NELLIE RODRIGUEZ is hitting just .277, but leads the team in July with three home runs and 11 RBIs...MIKE PAPI is hitting .321 in July with eight RBIs.
TIME FOR KIME: DACE KIME will take the mound for the Hillcats today against Winston-Salem and will be seeking his first win in his last seven starts...KIME has turned in three straight quality starts, but is 0-1 during that span and the Hillcats are 0-6 in his last six starts...KIME has been pitching really well, but has not received much run support for his efforts...He has received just 13 runs of support over his last five games...This season, KIME 4.25 runs of total support in his starts which is second worst on the team behind LUIS LUGO who has only received 3.87 runs per game in total support.
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: On July 20, 1944, Browns' hurler Nels Potter is banned for 10 days, becoming the first pitcher ever to be suspended for throwing a spitball. The spitball, shineball, and emeryball were outlawed by the major league's Joint Rules Committee in 1920, which allowed the 17 pitchers using the doctored pitches at the time to keep throwing the banned pitches legally until they retired..
