Miranda Named Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week"
July 20, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, Md.-The Frederick Keys are pleased to announce that Ariel Miranda has been named the Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week" for July 13-19. It is the first time the 26-year-old has won a weekly honor since signing with the Orioles in late-May. Miranda becomes the third Keys player to be recognized as either a player or pitcher of the week this season. He joins David Hess, who was named the circuit's Pitcher of the Week for June 22-28 and Drew Dosch who was the CL's Player of the Week for April 20-27.
In two starts, Miranda went 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA. Tossing 11 innings, the Cuban allowed just one run on five hits, while he walked two and struck out 13. Outstanding in his fifth start with the Keys on Sunday, the southpaw tossed six shutout innings of hitless baseball against Potomac. Permitting only five baserunners all game, he walked two and struck out six. It was Miranda's first quality start since joining the Orioles, while the six-inning stint was his longest stateside outing.
Signed by the Orioles on May 23, Miranda is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA over five starts with the orange and black since joining the club on June 28 from the GCL Orioles. In 22 innings he has allowed 10 runs on 16 hits to go with eight walks and 24 strikeouts. Opponents are batting .200 against him.
Prior to joining the Orioles organization, Miranda pitched seven professional seasons in the Cuban National Series, the country's top professional league. Beginning his pro career when he was just 17 years old, Miranda went 22-25 with a 3.78 over 80 total games (64 starts).
On Monday night, the Keys and the Nationals continue their three-game set. Left-hander Luis Gonzalez (5-7, 7.32) takes the mound for the Keys and will be opposed by Nats southpaw Matt Purke (0-0, --). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. For tickets, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
