Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 20, 2015) - Matt Heidenreich became the first High-A pitcher to 11 wins, and the Winston-Salem Dash plated five runs in the first inning en route to a 6-3 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday at BB&T Ballpark.
The first five Winston-Salem (15-9, 45-49) hitters reached base against Lynchburg starter Dace Kime (2-5). Adam Engel singled and stole second before Jake Peter walked. Trey Michalczewski drove in Engel with an RBI double, and a Keon Barnum two-run single gave the Dash the early 3-0 advantage.
Three batters later, Jeremy Dowdy added to Winston's lead with an RBI single, pushing his season-long hit streak to eight games. A fielder's choice coupled with an error sent in the Dash's fifth and final run of the frame. All told, Kime threw 41 pitches in Winston-Salem's nine-batter, five-run first, his only inning.
Heidenreich (11-2) took it from there, becoming the first pitcher in High-A to 11 wins. His only mistake was a two-run home run by Nellie Rodriguez in the sixth. Heidenreich surrendered those two runs on eight hits in six innings, with one walk against seven strikeouts.
Lynchburg's Antonio Romero fired five scoreless innings in relief of Kime to keep the game in check for the Hillcats (10-15, 43-52). However, Engel walked against Robbie Aviles to begin the seventh and advanced to third on a Lynchburg error. Engel then came into score on a double play to make it 6-2 Dash.
Dash reliever Jefferson Olacio walked the first two batters of the ninth before an Ivan Castillo single loaded the bases. A run came in on a double play, but Olacio fanned LeVon Washington to end the ballgame.
The Dash bid for their third sweep of the season on Tuesday by sending James Dykstra (3-8, 3.77 ERA) to the bump against Lynchburg's Michael Peoples (6-3, 4.70 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:45 p.m., with the first pitch at 7 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
The Dash and Hillcats finish out their series Tuesday. On Wednesday, Winston-Salem begins a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves' Carolina League affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
