Pelicans Best Red Sox with Seventh Straight Win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JULY 20, 2015) - On the strength of three run-scoring doubles, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, stretched their season-high win streak to seven games with a 4-1 decision over the Salem Red Sox at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Monday night.

Salem (49-46, 11-14 second half) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when shortstop Mauricio Dubon tagged the second pitch of the game for a solo home run over the left-center field wall. His long ball was the first a Pelicans pitcher had allowed in the previous 111.0 innings.

Myrtle Beach (55-39, 14-11 second half) tied the game at 1-1 off of Red Sox starter Teddy Stankiewicz in the home-half of the first when Mark Zagunis reached second base on a throwing error and Jeimer Candelario lined a sharp double to the left field corner. Stankiewicz lasted just that one inning, however, after being struck by a line drive off the bat of Jacob Rogers. The ball deflected off of his shoulder and head before being caught at first as part of a 1-3-6 double play to end the frame, but Stankiewicz did not remain in the game.

The Pelicans went on to score three earned runs off of right-hander Kyle Kaminska, who fired six innings in relief, but he took his first loss of the year.

In the second inning, Daniel Lockhart gave the Birds a 2-1 lead with a two-out two-bagger into the left-center field gap. The Birds tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning after Trey Martin singled and stole second base. Zagunis bounced a ground-rule double over the right field wall to drive in a third run and Chesny Young chipped an inside-out single down the right-field line to move the Pelicans in front, 4-1.

After allowing a pair of hits in the first inning, Pelicans starter Brad Markey (2-0) surrendered a single to right fielder Kevin Heller in the second inning and walked Mario Martinez in the fourth, but those were the only two other baserunners he would allow in his final five innings of work. The right-hander retired the final seven batters he faced, finishing the night with six innings on the mound, a pair of strikeouts, and one earned run en route to his second win of the year.

Young's lone hit of the night extended his Carolina League record on-base streak to 39 games. He broke the league record on Sunday with a first-inning single to left field off of Red Sox starter Aaron Wilkerson.

In the ninth, Pelicans right-hander David Berg retired the side in order, including a strikeout to end the game and seal his second professional save.

After beginning the second half with 10 losses in 15 games, including a losing skid of five games and another of four in-a-row, the Pelicans have rebounded to win seven consecutive games and nine of their last ten contests.

Right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng (3-6, 3.67) will have the 7:05 p.m. ET pitch in Tuesday night's series finale at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Red Sox will counter with right-hander Kevin McAvoy (5-7, 4.11).
