Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JULY 20, 2015) -- The Chicago Cubs announced on Monday that the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, have received catcher and first baseman Cael Brockmeyer (pronounced "Kale") from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher Jeremy Null was placed on the 7-day disabled list.
In his third professional season, Brockmeyer, 23, returns to the Pelicans after having played at four different levels this season. He was promoted to Double-A Tennessee on July 4 and saw action in seven games between July 5-8 and July 12-15. With the Smokies, Brockmeyer caught three games, spent one at first base, and twice was the designated hitter. In those seven games, he drove in four runs, scored once, and collected a pair of doubles. He also walked twice and struck out four times. He batted .238 (5-for-21) with two doubles, four RBI, a pair of walks was also 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter. His first hit at the Double-A level was a home run in the second at-bat of his first game on July 5.
Brockmeyer was later sent to Triple-A Iowa, where on July 10 and 11, he appeared twice as a defensive replacement at catcher before starting game two of a doubleheader behind the plate. He was sent back to Tennessee July 12-15 before returning to the I-Cubs for two more games on July 17 and 19. Overall in his five Triple-A contests, he caught four times and batted 1-for-8 with a pair of strikeouts.
A six-foot, five-inch native of San Diego, Calif., Brockmeyer batted .083 (1-for-12) with the Pelicans, collecting three RBI (all on sacrifice flies) in four games. Primarily a catcher, Brockmeyer has also played first base, and while with the Pelicans, the Midwest League midseason All-Star caught twice and served as the designated hitter twice. He joined Myrtle Beach from Class-A South Bend on June 29, and while with the Cubs, Brockmeyer batted .274 with a team-leading 16 doubles and five homers as well as a triple in 63 games. Prior to his promotion to the Pelicans, Brockmeyer also ranked second on the Cubs in RBI (33) and was tied for the third most runs scored (31).
The Chicago Cubs selected Brockmeyer in the sixteenth round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft out of California State University, Bakersfield.
Null, 21, won his first Carolina League game in his most recent start and has a 4.50 ERA to go along with a 1-1 record. In four starts totaling 22.0 innings of work, the six-foot, seven-inch righty has struck out 13 batters while allowing just two walks. Before his promotion, Null was 6-3 in 12 starts with South Bend, where he struck out 48 Midwest League batters and walked only four across 65 2/3 innings on the mound. Between the two levels this year, his combined 2.87 ERA ranks seventh-lowest among all Cubs minor league pitchers. Also ranked as the Cubs' twenty-eighth-best prospect by MLBPipeline.com, Chicago selected the young right-hander out of Western Carolina University in the fifteenth round of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft.
With the roster moves, the Pelicans' roster is at 25 active players, the Carolina League limit, and includes seven players on the disabled list, including one on the temporary inactive list.
The Pelicans continue their three-game homestand against the Salem Red Sox on Monday. The first pitch from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
