Saunders Shines in 2-1 Win over Steelheads
December 10, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, CO. - The Colorado Eagles put the brakes on the Idaho Steelheads power play, while forward Jackson Houck buried the game-winning goal late in the third period to give the Eagles a 2-1 victory over the Steelheads on Friday at the Budweiser Events Center. Colorado goaltender Clarke Saunders picked up his fourth consecutive win in net, stopping 33 of Idaho's 34 shots in the contest.
The Steelheads opened the scoring when forward Jefferson Dahl rushed down the ice on a breakaway, beating Saunders and giving Idaho the 1-0 advantage at the 14:23 mark of the first period of play.
Colorado would respond early in the second period when forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel tipped a shot from the circle past Idaho goalie Branden Komm, knotting the score at 1-1 just 25 seconds into the middle frame.
With the contest still deadlocked at 1-1 late in the third period, Houck would take a pass from behind the net from fellow forward Darryl Bootland and beat Komm with a nifty move in the low-slot to give Colorado its first lead of the night at 2-1 with 5:40 remaining in regulation.
Idaho would pull Komm in favor of the extra attacker, but Colorado would hang tough defensively and secure the 2-1 victory. The Eagles finished the night going 4-for-4 against the Steelheads power play, which entered the night ranked second in the ECHL at 24%. The win also puts the Eagles alone atop the ECHL's Mountain Division with 30 points in the standings.
The Eagles conclude a three-game set against the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday, December 10th at 7:05pm MT.
Season tickets for the 2016-17 season are on-sale now and can be reserved with a $50 deposit per seat by calling the Eagles ticket office at 970-686-SHOT (7468). A complete schedule can be found at www.ColoradoEagles.com.
