Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks took the Tulsa Oilers to overtime and a shootout on Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, and earned a standings point for the second game in a row. The Oilers, though, prevailed in a seven-round shootout three goals to two and claimed the win 3-2. The loss dipped the Mavericks' record to 9-10-4 on the season. Missouri opened the game with two shots on goal against Jamie Phillips during its first two shifts, but it was Tulsa's first shot of the game 2:36 into the contest that opened the scoring. While working down the right wing, Darcy Murphy threaded a pass to Ben Murphy in the doorstep. The latter Murphy used a backhand deflection to put the puck over Ville Husso's shoulder for his fifth goal of the season. The Mavericks had a number of chances to pull even thanks to four power plays in the period, but they could not cash in on the man advantage. Fans in attendance thought the Mavericks tied the game as the first-period clock expired but the officials ruled the puck crossed the line after the period had ended.

Saturday's second period felt like a deja vu of Friday night in Tulsa, as the Mavericks scored a pair of goals in quick succession to wipe out the Oilers' lead and take control of the game. Sam Povorozniouk netted his team-leading ninth of the season at 8:20 to tie the game. His initial shot was stopped by Phillips, but Povorozniouk circled the net to grab the rebound and then drilled a wrist shot home from the slot. Dane Fox followed with his eighth of the season 1:44 later with a lob shot backhander that beat a sprawled out Phillips. Missouri's lead lasted for all of 51 seconds thanks to Phil Brewer's sixth of the season past a screened Husso.

Both teams took extra care in the defensive zone in the third period and held eachother to fewer than 10 shots in the frame. Missouri tested Phillips five times while Husso turned away each of the seven shots he faced to keep the game knotted headed to overtime.

The Mavericks had two quality chances to end it in the extra session on breakaways by Fox and Gus Young. Phillips swatted each bid away, however, and sent the game to the shootout. Each squad scored on its first two attempts only to see the goalies take turns trading saves for the next four rounds. In the top of the seventh Dmitri Ognev snuck one inside the post, then Phillips stopped Jacob Doty at the other end to seal the win.

Husso stopped 27 of 29 through overtime and four of seven in the shootout. The Mavericks went 0-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
