Great Lakes Loons News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps played as the Beer City Bung Hammers on Saturday night and were trying to celebrate the rich history of craft beer in Grand Rapids with a victory. The Great Lakes Loons had other ideas and took game one of a three-game series, 6-2, to win their sixth straight ballgame.

Again, it wasn't just one side of the ball that granted the Loons a victory. They got big-time contributions from three different bats (Chris Roller, Jacob Amaya and Romer Cuadrado) and the combination of Jose Martinez and Justin Hagenman struck out 10 while holding the 'Caps to two runs on six hits.

With the Loons already ahead 1-0 in the third inning, Cuadrado collected the second of his three hits by platting two on a single against starter Gio Arriera. Amaya added to the lead with an RBI-double in the fifth off Arriera (L, 3-8) and Roller crushed a two-run home run in the ninth inning to give the Loons their first long ball since last Thursday.

Cuadrado's three hits were tied for the most he's had in a game this year. Amaya also had three hits marking the fifth time he has accomplished that this season. Meanwhile, Roller's seven total bases tied his Loons career-high.

Martinez (W, 8-1) went six 2/3 innings without allowing a run before, on the final pitch of his night, he gave up a two-run blast to 2019 Tigers sixth-round pick Cooper Johnson. The Loons have now won nine of Martinez' 10 starts this year.

The Loons are off to a perfect 4-0 start to their current road trip which continues on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. EDT against the Whitecaps. Listen to the broadcast on ESPN 100.9-FM beginning at 5:30.
