Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - In front of 7,544 on Oregon Trail Night, the Lansing Lugnuts (17-17, 49-54) may not have contracted dysentery - but they were shut out by the South Bend Cubs (17-17, 54-48), 6-0, on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

It was the fifth straight series-opening defeat suffered by the Lugnuts; they have followed up the previous four with a victory in the second game.

The Cubs drew 10 walks from four Nuts pitchers, a Lansing season high, while scoring one run in the first inning and two in the third against starter Troy Miller (Loss, 4-5) before adding three runs in the eighth against the debuting Andy McGuire.

South Bend starter Brendon Little pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, walking three and striking out five. Casey Ryan (Win, 3-1) followed with 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit, and Sean Barry gave up one hit in the final two innings.

The Lugnuts' five hits, all singles, were spread out over five players: Gabriel Moreno, DJ Neal, Johnny Aiello, Hagen Danner and Tanner Kirwer.

In the loss, Josh Hiatt tossed 2 1/3 hitless, scoreless innings and Joey Pulido pitched the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit or a run.

The middle game of the three-game series will take place on a Delta Dental Kids Day / Superhero Day, with Play Catch on the Field before the game and Kids Run the Bases after the game! Right-hander Sean Wymer (5.61 ERA) starts at 1:05 p.m. against South Bend right-hander Cam Sanders (3.08).
