Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors fell in the last seconds to the Bakersfield Jam 106-105 Saturday to close out the regular season. In front of a sellout crowd at the Kaiser Permanente Arena, four Warriors players scored in double figures.
Santa Cruz was led by Darington Hobson, who recorded the team's first triple-double of the season with 16 points, 12 rebounds and a game-high 11 assists off the bench. Jeremy Tyler, also coming off the bench, had a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Cameron Jones added 19 points and seven boards and Scott Machado scored 22 points.
Bakersfield was paced by James Nunnally, who scored a game-high 33 points. Diante Garrett, on assignment from the Phoenix Suns, added 32 points and Chris Cooper recorded a double-double with a game-high 19 rebounds and 12 points.
The Warriors were down by as many as twelve in the second quarter, but Santa Cruz clawed back to within three at halftime. The Warriors took the lead with 4:13 left in the game on a Jeremy Tyler two-handed flush, but after trading buckets, James Nunnally connected on a corner three-ball with 3.6 seconds left to pull Bakersfield ahead for good.
Santa Cruz shot 47.1% from the field compared to the Jam's 43.2%. The Warriors outrebounded Bakersfield (53-48), handed out more assists (29-27), scored more points in the paint (54-42) and committed fewer turnovers (16-14).
Playoff scheduling and matchups will be announced tomorrow. Bakersfield enters the NBA D-League playoffs with the best record (36-14) and the West Division title. The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (35-15) have won the Central Division, and the Canton Charge (30-20) have won the East Division. The division winners will select opponents consisting of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (27-23), Austin Toros (27-23), Tulsa 66ers (27-23) and Maine Red Claws (26-24). Santa Cruz (the wild card team with the best record) will play the team not chosen by the three division winners in the opening round of the playoffs.
