Sands Captures League Honors
April 19, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
Loons outfielder/first baseman Jerry Sands has been honored by the Midwest League as the first Offensive Player of the Week for 2010. The honor recognizes the top offensive player in the league for the first week and a half of the season (April 8-18).
Sands currently leads the league in slugging percentage (.805), is tied for first in extra-base hits (nine), is second in batting average (.439), hits (18), runs (11), total bases (33), is tied for second in RBIs (12) and triples (two) and ranks fifth in on-base percentage (.489).
Sands hit a total of 19 home runs last season between the Loons and the Dodgers' short-season affiliate in Ogden, UT. At the time of his promotion to the Loons, he was batting .350 with 14 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was the Loons' starting first baseman during the final month of 2009 and throughout the Loons' playoff run.
A 25th round draft choice of the Dodgers in 2008, Sands attended Catawba College in North Carolina.
Each week, the Midwest League selects one offensive player and one pitcher for its player of the week awards. Wisconsin's Lian Hendriks was selected the league's Pitcher of the Week. Loons players have been selected for the league's weekly honors seven different times. Those players previously honored are left-handed pitchers Clayton Kershaw (June 4, 2007) and Cody White (June 25, 2007), shortstop Dee Gordon (twice, May 4, 2009 and June 22, 2009), right-handed pitcher JonMichael Redding (June 1, 2009), third baseman Anthony Hatch (August 31, 2009) and left-handed pitcher Aaron Miller (August 31, 2009).
The Loons and West Michigan Whitecaps play today for the final game of a three-game series and the Loons' third game in a six-day road trip at 6:35pm in Comstock Park, MI. Right-hander Brett Wallach (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who hasn't allowed an earned run all season, starts for the Loons against West Michigan left-hander Jade Todd (0-1, 6.40). The game will be carried live on ESPN 100.9-FM.
