South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Dayton, OH - The South Bend Silver Hawks return from their six game road trip with their first series win of the year, posting a 4-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field on Monday night to take two out of three in the series.

Dayton struck first for two runs in the bottom of the second inning against South Bend starter Charles Brewer (WP, 1-2). Chris Richburg and Kevin Coddington had back-to-back doubles to score the first run of the game. After a balk moved Coddington to third, Mark Fleury brought him home with a sacrifice fly for the early 2-0 lead.

Those would be the only runs allowed by Brewer, who turned in another solid outing of 5.2 innings, striking out seven and not walking anyone.

South Bend put together a big two out rally in the fifth to take the lead against Dayton starter Pedro Villarreal (LP, 0-1). Errol Hollinger started the rally with a single to left, and moved up to second on a walk to Ender Inciarte. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, and Keon Broxton showed off his speed to leg out an infield hit to allow Hollinger to score the first run.

South Bend wasn't finished however, as Chris Owings followed with a single to center to tie the game. Again Broxton showed off his speed, taking third on the play while Owings alertly moved up to second. Bobby Borchering drove them both home with a single to right, helping the Silver Hawks to a 4-2 lead. Borchering now leads the team with six RBIs this season.

Dayton got a run in the bottom of the eighth, but left the tying run on third when Yonata Ortega (SV, 2) struck out the final two batters of the inning. Ortega allowed a one out single in the ninth, but got a nice sliding catch in left from David Narodowski for the final out to earn his second save of the series.

The Silver Hawks return home to Coveleski Stadium for a game against the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Tuesday evening at 6:30 PM. RHP Eric Smith (0-1, 1.64 ERA) will start for South Bend while the Hot Rods send RHP Shane Dyer (0-0, 1.80 ERA) to the hill. Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
