Burlington Bees News Release

Peoria, IL (April 19, 2010) - On any other night, an effort like Kelvin Herrera's on Monday might have been enough to bring the Burlington Bees a victory.

Herrera turned in his best effort of the season and went toe-to-toe with a two-time Major League All-Star for five innings, but the Peoria Chiefs eked out a 2-1 win on the strength of seven stellar innings from rehabbing Cubs starter Ted Lilly.

The Bees made the southpaw look mortal in the first inning, picking up a run on a Wil Myers triple to deep left-center field following a game-opening walk to Hilton Richardson.

Meanwhile, Herrera mowed down the first eight Peoria batters he faced until he faced Lilly (W, 1-0), batting in the nine spot. Lilly blooped a single over the head of the shortstop, then, to the surprise of everyone at O'Brien Field except Bees catcher Jose Bonilla, attempted to steal second before being thrown out to end the third.

In the fourth, Peoria shortstop Hak-Ju Lee drew a leadoff walk before stealing second and third to put himself in position to score the game-tying run, which he did when Matt Cerda singled to center.

Herrera left after pitching a scoreless fifth with the game still knotted at one. The Dominican right-hander allowed a run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks in his finest outing of the young season.

Reliever Michael Lehmann (L, 0-1) entered in the sixth, where he was greeted immediately by a walk and two hits, the last of which was a Justin Bour RBI single to give the Chiefs a lead they would not relinquish.

Bonilla and Deivy Batista also picked up hits off of Lilly. Harold Mozingo tossed a scoreless eighth to keep the deficit at one headed into the ninth, but two perfect innings from Peoria reliever Rob Whitenack (S, 1) were enough to give the Chiefs the sweep in their first home series of the year.

The Bees make their first trip to Clinton on Tuesday night to open a three-game series with the LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field. Listen in as Nick Devlin brings you the Casebine Community Credit Union Pregame Show starting at 6:10 on News Radio 1490 KBUR.
