Kernels top Cougars, 6-3, in 10 innings

Geneva, IL - Luis Jimenz drove in three runs in the top of the 10th inning with a bases-loaded triple to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 6-3 win over Kane County on Monday afternoon. Johnny Hellweg worked around a walk and single in the bottom of the inning to pick up his second save and preserve the win for Buddy Boshers (1-0).

The Kernels took a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs. First, Mike Trout singled and scored on an error in the first inning. Then, Adam Younger doubled and scored on a throwing error in the sixth inning.

Kane County took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits and four walks of Kernels reliever Fabio Martinez. The Kernels tied the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Trout to score Eric Oliver.

Kernels starter Tyler Skaggs allowed four hits and struck out six over five innings in a no-decision effort. David Carpenter struck out three over 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Martinez. Kane County reliever Jose Guzman (1-1) took the loss.

Heading into Tuesday's game in Wisconsin, the Kernels are 2-1 on their nine game road trip. They play three games in Appleton, followed by a three game commuter series with Burlington before returning to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, April 27.
