Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Bobby Borchering's two-run single broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and the South Bend Silver Hawks held on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 4-3 on Monday night before a crowd of 8,018 at Fifth Third Field. The Silver Hawks took two of three games in the series and raised their record to 2-10 on the season. The Dragons fell to 7-5 with the loss.

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Chris Richburg and Kevin Coddington delivered back-to-back doubles to produce the first run. Coddington went to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Fleury.

South Bend scored four runs in the fifth inning against Dragons starting pitcher Pedro Villarreal (0-1). Villarreal had allowed only one hit and one walk on the night before South Bend put five straight batters on base with two outs in the inning and took a 4-2 lead. Borchering delivered the tie-breaking hit with single to right with runners at second and third.

Dayton scored a run in the eighth when Didi Gregorius singled, went to second on a single by Henry Rodriguez, advanced to third on Efrain Contreras' sacrifice, and scored on a wild pitch. But that would close out the Dragons scoring on the night. Dayton left runners in scoring position in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Richburg was 2 for 4 with two doubles. Fluery was 2 for 2 with a sacrifice fly and a walk.

Villarreal worked five innings, allowing five hits and four runs with one walk and one strikeout to suffer the loss.

The Dragons remain home and open a new three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Brian Pearl (0-0, 2.79) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Jacob Turner (0-0, 1.00). The home stand continues Wednesday and Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
