COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Second baseman Rafael Ynoa helped the Great Lakes Loons wiggle out of two jams in the late innings of Monday night's 5-3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark.

In the seventh inning, with the Loons up 5-3, West Michigan loaded the bases with no one out. But relief pitcher Justin Miller struck out Mike Gosse for the first out. Wade Gaynor followed with a hard ground ball up the middle, but Ynoa slid to his right, made the play, shuffled the ball to shortstop Pedro Guerrero, who relayed the throw to first for an inning-ending double play.

With the score still 5-3 in the ninth, West Michigan loaded the bases with one out against closer Steve Smith. But Gosse hit a sharp line drive to Ynoa, caught the ball and stepped on second base to double off runner Eric Roof.

Brett Wallach (2-0) threw a career-high 5 2/3 innings to notch his second win of the year. He surrendered an earned run in the second, his first earned run allowed this year, followed by two unearned runs in the sixth. The two unearned runs crossed the plate after Miller entered in relief on an error by third baseman Yohan Garcia.

Smith did not allow a run in the eighth and ninth innings for his team-leading third save of the year.

Chris Jacobs pushed across two key runs for the Loons in the sixth. With two outs and the bases empty and Great Lakes leading 3-1, Gorman Erickson walked then scored on a two-run home run by Jacobs, his second long ball of the year. Those two runs proved to be the difference with West Michigan pushing across two unearned runs in the home half of the inning.

On the day he was named the Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week, Jerry Sands went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Sands' lone hit was a double leading off the second, which was followed by an RBI single by Blake Smith. Smith later scored on a run-producing single by Garcia.

Brian Cavazos-Galvez single-handedly pushed across a Loons run in the third. He led off the inning with a single, then stole second base. One pitch later, he swiped third and advanced to the plate of an errant throw by Roof.

The Loons travel to Eastlake, OH to play their first-ever game against the Lake County Captains, one of two new entrants to the Midwest League. Right-hander Allen Webster (2-0, 2.16 ERA) will start for the Loons. The Captains will send left-hander Chris Jones (1-0, 0.00) to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm. The game will be carried live on ESPN 100.9-FM.

The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
