Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, Ga. - Marcus Sanders' single drove in Alex Requena from third as the GreenJackets beat Savannah, 6-5 in a 15 inning marathon at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Friday. The win by Augusta keeps them in the hunt for the first half title in the Southern Division. The game took four hours and thirty-six minutes to play.
The GreenJackets matched one run scored by Savannah in the 11th and 14th and finally walked off with a win in the 15th. Requena led off the 15th for the GreenJackets with a single to center. With Sanders batting, Requena stole his 31st base of the season and went to third on an errant throw from catcher Devin Ivany. Sanders hit a fly ball to center, easily dropping with the drawn in outfield.
Each position player for the GreenJackets had an at bat or pinch ran sometime in this game. Both teams combined to throw 13 pitchers tonight and those pitchers struck out 32 batters. The game also saw Savannah's Steve Mortimer and manager Randy Knorr ejected.
After nine innings, the score was tied at 3-3. Brad Ditter led off the 11th against reliever Sean Martin with a single to left. After a Luke Montz sacrifice bunt, Franklyn Jimenez fly out, and Edgardo Baez walk, Ivany ripped a double down the left field line, driving in Montz and giving the Sand Gnats a 4-3 lead. With second and third and two out, Ofilio Castro ended the inning when he fouled out to first.
Savannah's 4-3 lead, however, was short lived. With one out, Jason Columbus reached base on a routine ground ball to the third baseman Castro which he booted. Lisandro Disla then pinch ran for Columbus and advanced to second on Brian Horwitz' bloop single. Simon Klink followed and reached base on a hit by pitch, bringing Brad Vericker up with the bases loaded. Vericker hit into a fielder's choice that was broken up by a hard slide from Simon Klink. The fielder's choice drove in Disla and tied the score at 4-4.
In the 14th, Castro led off the inning with a single to center off reliever Tim Alvarez. After Doug Vroman sacrificed Castro to second, Reggie Fitzpatrick lined a single to right, driving in Castro. Fitzpatrick advanced to third on Ian Desmond's infield single. However, Fitzpatrick failed to advance after Ditter popped out weakly to right. After Rogearvin Bernadina walked, Jimenez struck out swinging.
Once again the GreenJackets answered with their own scoring. After Simon Klink struck out, Mike Wagner walked. Jon Armitage doubled to left, driving in Wagner from first. After Armitage went to third on the throw home, Steve Holm popped out to first and Aaron Hornostaj struck out, stranding Armitage at third.
After the first three innings, the GreenJackets led 1-0 without the benefit of a hit. Marcus Sanders walked with one out in the first and proceeded to steal his Minor League leading 40th base. With two outs, Brian Horwitz reached safely when his grounder was misplayed by second baseman Brad Ditter, allowing Sanders to score.
