June 18, 2005 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - For the second time in this series, Greenville forced Charleston to leave the champagne on ice. Brett LeVier's three-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning capped a five-run rally to give the Bombers a 5-4 come from behind victory over the RiverDogs on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium.
Charleston's magic number to clinch the South Atlantic League's first-half Southen Division title remains at one. With Augusta getting rained out vs. Savannah, the RiverDogs need a win at Greenville Sunday or one Greenjackets loss in Sunday's doubleheader vs. the Sandgnats in order to qualify for the post-season. The Bombers host Charleston tomorrow at 6:05pm, while Augusta's twinbill begins at 1:15pm.
For the first five innings Saturday it looked as if the RiverDogs were going to make Sunday's action moot. A two-run single by Edwar Gonzalez in the fourth inning and a two-run rally in the fifth capped by Yosvany Almario's RBI single off Adam Blackley (2-7) put Charleston ahead, 4-0.
Meanwhile, RiverDogs starter Tyler Clippard (0-1) cruised early, shutting out the Bombers through the first five innings. Clippard, a Florida State League All-Star who was reassigned to Charleston from Advanced-A Tampa on the day of that league's All-Star game, saw things unravel in the sixth inning.
With two outs, the Bombers strung together three straight singles, including RBI hits by Jon DeVries and Christian Lara to cut the deficit to 4-2. LeVier then drilled Clippard's first pitch to deep left field for his second homer of the season to put the Bombers ahead to stay.
Blackley earned his first win since April 10th, snapping a seven-game personal losing streak. He recieved relief help from Ryan Schroyer, who entered the game in the seventh inning with the tying run at third and two outs. The righthander retired Cody Ehlers on a pop out and then set down the final six Charleston batters of the night to record his third save of the season.
Righthanders Jarret Gardner (1-1) for Greenville and Jeff Marquez (4-6) for Charleston will pitch in Sunday's series and homestand finale.
